Sorry, it was in Texas City, not Deer Park....

I think the place was called Shenanigans or something like that. It's illegal to play in a public place, or anywhere where the house makes money from it. This means if the house gains any extra business from beer sales, food sales. Any income they gain from gambling is considered illegal.

EDIT: here's a link to the story about the bar. I'm still looking for the rules on gambling.

Pokercampus.com is a great place to find games in Houston or talk/learn about poker.
This somewhat clears up what you can and can't do:

What is and isn't legal

Basically, noone can have an advantage, noone may have any economic benefits other than their winnings or losings, and the risk of winning and losing must be the same.

I wouldn't mind playing sometime over the christmas break, just as long as it's a place where you dont have to be 18 to get in.

I think most poker rooms are gonna want you to be 18.

I doubt too many people playing at poker rooms a couple times a week would be scared of any 17 year old.

And what I meant by that was that the owners of these places don't need unwanted publicising of their places, or minors who may have mad parents coming after them when they lose $500 in 2 hours.
