"Who's Calling, Please?" - A call from President Bush to Mack Brown
President's call to Mack Brown
"Who's Calling, Please?"
AUSTIN, TX -- Sally Brown started to not answer her cell phone when it rang Monday night. After all, she and her husband, Texas head coach football Mack Brown, were still trying to unpack from a very successful 10-day trip to California, where Browns Longhorns defeated Michigan, 38-37, in the Rose Bowl Game.
The call was coming from an unidentified number, but curiosity got the best of her. When she finally did answer, the voice on the other end of the line said, "Mrs. Brown? This is the President's secretary."
In a day of telemarketing, misdialed calls and crank calls, Sally Brown asked skeptically, "which President?"
"President George W. Bush," came the reply.
"You're THE President's secretary?" said Sally.
"Yes," said the voice on the phone, "and he would like to speak with your husband."
Sally looked at the phone, thought to herself "The President of The United States is calling on my cell phone," and said, "Of course…you'll have to excuse me, I'm a bit flustered right now."
And then she handed the phone to her husband, who walked out the front door of his house and into the Texas night to make sure there was no interference with reception. It really isn't cool to say "Can you hear me now?" to the President of the United States.
The relationship between The President, Mack Brown and Texas football stretches back to his days when he was Governor of Texas, and used the Longhorns' strength and conditioning facility for his regular workouts.
The two have exchanged notes and had a few conversations since President Bush was elected in 2000, but this was a call with a purpose: The President was calling to congratulate Brown and his team on their victory in the Rose Bowl.
"He just wanted to tell us how proud he was of the team, of the way it kept fighting back, and of the class the kids showed," said Brown. He was also very complimentary of Michigan, and talked about how the game, and the way in which it was played, gave all Americans a right to feel proud of college football. He said he watched every play, right down to the last kick."
When he was Governor of Texas, Bush—a former owner of the Texas Rangers Baseball Club—was a frequent visitor to Longhorn football and basketball games. In fact, Brown and President Bush first met at press row at a Longhorn basketball game right after Brown had been hired.
Brown had been asked to say a few words, and he turned to Bush and asked him what he should say.
"Just say, I'm proud to be the head football coach at The University of Texas, in the Great State of Texas," Bush said.
Which is exactly what Brown did, to a rousing standing ovation.
When he returned to his seat, he looked at Bush and said jokingly, "you're pretty good…you ought to think about running for president some day."
How cool is that, that THE President of the United States takes time to call his buddy Mack Brown after the Rose bowl victory!
Hook'em!!
