Default pinging/rattiling noise

yesterday i noticed a pinging noise coming from the what seems to be left side of my engine. at first i thought i dropped a push rod, but then i realized my engine was still running. second i thought i had broken a valve spring so i took off both valve covers and checked, both sides had all of their rods and all the springs were good.

this noise only seems to happen at low rpms 2500 and less. it sounds like someone threw ball bearings in my cylinders.

could this be detonation? or maybe a really really noisey pilot bearing?

please any help is appreciated

Did you upgrade the lifters when you had the T-Rex installed? If not, then it's probably a lifter but, I would really have to hear it.

No not really. That's one of the downfalls of the LS1, you have to pull the heads to check/change the lifters. Let me know if I can help.

I really dont know the noise, but i was hearing a weird noise, and i had an exhaust leak. The gasket was like half burnt. So i had to put the stock metal ones back on.

No, I have seen it both ways. If it's starting to flatten out the roller you will usually only hear it at a certain RPM. The worse it gets, the more you will hear it.

Mine is more down at the floor than in the engine compartment. I was told it was time for a tune, but I have asked that question before and was told not really need one till I do h/c, or cam only. Maybe I need to do the AIR pump gasket mod.

BadTexasZ28, you said you checked the springs and pushrods already but, be sure to carefully inspect the rocker arms to make sure none of them have lost any needle bearings.

A flat spot on the roller of the lifter will eventually wipe out that cam lobe it is riding on if it hasn't already. I wouldn't run it much more until you find the problem.

If it is a lifter, you could replace them with either the Crane or Comp Cams stock replacements. I have had good luck with the Cranes. Be sure to check the cam if you find a bad lifter.

Let me know if we can help.

ok now i am baffled. i pulled the car into the garage today to start tearing down my engine and it was making the sound pretty consistantly, so i got out my mechanics stethoscope... i checked just about everywhere you could on the engine and could not locate the noise. after doing some searches both here and a couple of other lsx.com's i was for sure thinking my timing chain was fucked, but the noise is coming from the back of the engine. also it drags *** when you first go to start it up (which is another reason i was thinking chain was bad causing it to load up) anyone have any other thoughts on what my problem could be? maybe something to do with the tranny? it usually only does the noise when i am in gear and moving, but every once in awhile it will rattle a little bit while idleing........i just dont know where to start......

How long has it been doing this? Could be nothing worse than a bad tank of gas.

Anytime you change any headers you should always use the metal gaskets...metal ones wont burn
