Default Contemplating a relocation to Corpus Christi

My wife and I are considering a relocation package to CC and were wondering what residents (past and present) have to say about living there. Mainly we are interested in the schools, k-12, child care, and the medical facilities (expecting our first born in November).

Also, anyone that's lived in both Houston and CC, what are some of the pro's and con's? Where would you prefer to be?

TIA

CC is a nice place. If you like fishing the beach and just a nice place to walk around then its all good.

Those are all very appealing aspects of CC to us. We just got back a few hours ago from a weekend visit. The traffic, or lack there of, is awesome!

My fiance' wants to go back there. She lived there from '00 to '03. I've never been, but we're going in 2 weeks for some concert and a sea sculptures thing she likes to go to. It's nice from what I could tell by the pics.

Corpus is alright, just like any other town really. If I had to choose I'd live in Houston, but I've never lived there so take that for what it's worth.
As far as schools, the best ones are in the south side. King and Carrol, from what I know. Calallen schools are supposed to be even better, but that's not really CC.
As far as medical care there have been some problems with frivilous law suits, so some doctors have left the area, however there is a top notch childrens hospital (Driscol Childrens Hospital) in the area.
One of the major cons of Corpus is having to go to Edinburgh or SA just to hit the damn track.
If you've got more questions, ask away. I'll help you out with what I can, but I'm not a corpus native.

The lack of a drag strip sux ***, but it may be my calling to open one of my own.

Calongo_SS - It's good to hear from someone that is not a native - Puts us in the same boat. What brought you to CC? How long have you been there? What's it like compared to home?

When I got out of college I took a job and ended up in Corpus. I've been here since 2001. Compared to home, well it's HOT. I'm originally a yankee, four years later and I'm still adjusting. All in all Corpus isn't a bad place to live, but it's not really the paradise on the beach some people think it is. It's like any other town of it's size, there's some shitty neighborhoods and some other problems. Shitty roads is on the top of my list.
On the bright side, we have a brand new baseball stadium with a minor league team (The Hooks), and local government is really trying to do something with the bayfront area (downtown).

Make the move and open up a drag strip, you'd make a killing. Well, that's assuming ricers go to track. You should see all the ricers on a fri or sat night hanging out in a vacated parking lot.

The CC ricers are a trip. While I was there this weekend, I saw what looked like a civic at one time with a torn rear bumper, hardly any paint, and a shiny new F&F bi-wing.

Anyone else from CC???

I really think CC sucks!!!! But thats my opinion, lol. Im from the Valley, McAllen to be exact. Ive been to Corpus a couple times but besides the beachfront theres really nothing exciting. Theres alot to do over here in the Valley and the Racing at Edinburg International Racetrack is fierce and pretty cool. Especially Friday nights. GL with your decision.

Well, having spent most of my life in the Valley and now living in Houston I'd say Corpus is OK but nothing special. The beach isn't anywhere as near as nice as South Padre Island but, then again, its a lot better than Galveston. I think I'd look at living in one of the smaller towns north of the bay and commuting to work. Traffic isn't any where near what it is here and the Valley, well, its just non-existant.

I guess Corpus is kinda in the middle. The Valley on the other hand, well, thats just a whole other story of its own. I may be going back there too!

I have lived here in Corpus for 22 years This place is alright. I am planning to move to Houston though. The job market here is not too good. Umm... the night life is cool if you enjoy the club scene. We have a lot of those. I don't go much, just spend the night cruising away. The scenary here is great on Ocean Drive and on Padre Island. But if I had a choice, I would choose a city that is more.... I guess developed??? Corpus is changing fast so a lot of things are going on. Places that were once nice to live in are going downhill.

I appreciate the feedback guys. The more the better.

Sounds to me like CC isn't all that different from Houston, just 1/10 the size.

born and raised in CC. Been gone for about 10 years now, but I visit quite often as my parents still live there (actually in Portland). I would highly advise you stick to Portland (Gregory-Portland ISD) or Callalan as far as school districts if kids are a concern. Those are far and away the superior academic school districts in the coastal bend area and maintain extremely high levels of support from the residents in those communities. Just my .02 cents.

If you like golf, North Shore CC in Portland is a fabulous course with 4 holes running right along Corpus Christi Bay. Awesome golf course, one of my favorites in Texas.

Im from Corpus, basically if you like fishing and outdoor activities.. hunting etc.. nice place.

I think its somewhat boring to be truthful. But im 19, and run out of things to do I guess. You might want to look into San Antonio or Austin as well. They are pretty nice cities.

i don't think i'm underpaid... 22 years old and 6 figures on a 21 and 7 rotation is pretty good to me. i've got a house in rockport with 2 other guys. we work in ingleside at GMF and hang out in portland or in corpus. i like it down here. there is a lot of good bars and restaurants if you're into that kinda thing. hooks games are fun. one of my roomates bow hunts and has lease set up not 10 minutes from our house, lol. not too sure on the car scene though.... been rolling in the sierra and letting the t/a sit in houston.

I was born in raised in CC, well actually in Robstown....stay away from there by the way! CC is great for the beach, fishing, and some of the scenery. The car scene is good, but all street stuff due to the lack of close tracks, I see WFO is still running around down there. As for the schools, just do the research as to where you would live, there are some horrible schools, yet there are some great schools. Some of the surrounding areas are probably a little better than right in the middle of CC, as listed above: Callalen, Gregory Portland, etc. Id say CC is catching up with medical facilities and industrial growth; every time I visit, some new areas are developed. I would have to say that I do think crime rate is high for its size.

All just my opinion, Ive never lived in Houston though, nor do I know the area whatsoever. I would never move back, I just like visiting for beaches and fishing, oh yeah, family too.
