Default I think I got fired....sort of

So I go to the boss today and tell him that my needs and his needs are far enough apart that I'm going to be pushing my resume around pretty heavy. He tells me to sleep on it and let him know Friday when my last day is. I guess this means that I have to quit because I'm sending out my resume? What happens if I tell him November? Is he going to fire me? Or just make my work environment even worse?

Get this - my job is already posted on the Chronicle website.

I didn't tell him I was quitting. I told him I was sending my resume out. Did I get fired??

BTW - if anyone is looking for a mechanical designer (custom tools, little robots, tubular structural weldments) drop me a note, eh?

Similar issues where I work. But you should never show all your cards. You saying that you are looking and sending our resumes puts you on the chopping block. You are supposed to ATLEAST have some leads going, if not job offers pending before you do something like that. Good luck, just go back and tell him you were having a bad day, then start looking for another job.

Yeah all of that is good info, but maybe he is just trying to plan ahead. You should have another discussion with him to clarify. You have already told him the other stuff this should just be a fairly easy conversation. Good luck.

We had an HR guy from American Acrylic? come to our Fraternity and give us a talk on hiring and what not, what companies look for. Here is what he told us, you can put your resume out there and tell them not to contact your current employer because of its potential consequennces. If your resume is picked up bya head hunter they cut your info out any way because they dont want the company going straight to you and bypassing the entire process of them getting paid.

Sit down and have a pow wow with him about how valuable you are to the company. You might end up getting a raise. If not, remind him that you have the knowledge and you are willing to teach to new guy ( if they get one) the ropes, while you are expanding your horizon. Take a hit to your pride and tell him you would appreciate it if you could still be in good standing until the "greener grass" presents itself. If he's a decent guy appreciating your motives, he'll give you the time.
I've been in the same circumstance, be humble as much as it pains you, it may pay off with a steady pay check until the end.

Good advice BLackbird. I have been tring to explain this to a coulple of friends and they just don't seem to get it. Some times you have to eat crow to have a pay check and it never tastes good to eat crow, but I'd like to pay bills on the other hand.

Hey TX T/A, who do you work for if you don't mind my asking. I've got a few friends that work in LE around town, kinda curious if you've ever bumped into any of them. At least one of em actively trolls this site and has an 02 SS.

Yup. As others have said, telling your boss that you're sending out resume's is pretty much telling him you're leaving the company, so I'd be looking for your replacement, too.

I can design the mechanical part of it - you need to find a software guy to write a program to run it.

Heck, cell phones are voice activated. A robot would be easy. Tell it "wrench" and then tell it "9/16" and it'll go into it's program, know where the wrench is, reach in a grab it and reach it over to you.

Of course, by the time it all got designed, built, tested, and ready for production you'd probably be looking at $50k or better.

Maybe just pull the tool box a little closer

Damn Stephen, that's harsh!

Todd, unless your boss specifically told you that you were terminated and your HR department hasn't contacted you, then you're still employed. In the meantime, talk with your boss and see what y'all can work out.

I am VERY fortunate that my boss and I have a great working relationship. When we don't see eye-to-eye on a certain matter, he ends up telling me to kiss his ***, and I in turn tell him to f**k off.

Be careful of the boss wanting to take you to lunch. Then you can't make a scene.

Thanks for the responses.

As far as "eating crow" I've been doing that for 27 months. Some examples:

On Friday afternoons at 4:30 we have a meeting to see if we're working the weekend.

Yes, I said Friday afternoons at 4:30.

Last year I worked at least two stretches of 26-28 days STRAIGHT working 10-12 hours per day - common runs without a day off are 14 days.

Management style used? Cussing is common, as is throwing things, slamming doors, talking to employees like they are the stupidest human that ever existed, comments like "pretend you're the designer" or "maybe I need to put an ad in the paper".

In exchange for my extremely hard work, dedication, loyalty, and not to mention scheduling my entire life and my family around the needs of my employer, my 2 year raise was exactly 3 months late and a whopping 50 cents per hour.

So, regardless, I will be leaving the company.

I find it odd that just because I'm looking for a new job that I am required to quit. After all, I've accommodated his needs by being flexible on scheduling for 27 months - I guess it's just too much to ask for 1 month of returning the favor.
