Default Problem Starting

Hello. I've got a 2000 Trans Am, manual transmission. I'm having a problem when attemting to start the car. I get in, push the clutch all the way in, turn to START and nothing happens. I turn back to ON, then go back to START and it will then crank and start. Why the intermittent problem not cranking? Is the starter solenoid going bad? Please help!! Thanks!

Could be anything from a dead battery, loose cable, faulty ignition switch to a bad starter solenoid.

You need to load test the battery, do a starter draw test and then start checking the ignition switch and VATS system.

Turn on the head lamps and try to crank the car, if they go completely out then either the battery is very weak or you have a loose connection. If nothing changes then likely the problem is in the VATS system or the ignition switch.

OK, dumb question but what is the VATS system? Also, I don't think the SECURITY is flashing during, but I'll check later today. Thanks, Mike!!

VATS = Vehicle Anti-Theft System. It's the little doo-dad that works with the resistor in your key to let you start the car. Mine wore out and I had a helluva time getting it started for a while, before it finally just died on me.

Is it a module that can be replaced, or is it part of the on board computer? Is there a why to test for it? If it's bad, would the stereo, warning lights all come on? What did you do to fix? Thanks again, Mike.

It's part of the key tumbler on the steering column. The entire tumbler has to be replaced and re-keyed, which isn't cheap, as I recall. I seem to remember a thread in the electronics section about deleting it by replacing a few resisitors, but I could be mistaken.

I would check the regular offenders (battery, alternator, fuses, etc.) first.
