Question Question on sales tax

What is the out of state sales tax? I am looking at getting a motorcycle from Tennessee, and registering it here in Texas.

Thanks guys!

You shouldn't pay out of state sales tax, just the selling price. Then, when you register it here in TX, you will have to pay the TX sales tax (6.25%).

You only pay out of state sales tax on a vehicle if it is registered in the state you buy from.

if your buyig it from a person just pay him the price and register it in tx. could just say it was a gift or say you bought it for 100 bucks when you register it thus no taxes.

ive never financed a car or bought from a dealer so it may work differently for them

Doesn't matter which state it is currently registered in. You only pay taxes in the state you are going to register it in when you buy it.

I do this sometimes and pay taxes on $1.00 when they ask how much it was bought for. Long as you pay cash there is no paper trail and they never have asked for a bill of sale. One thing you dont want to do is register as a gift from someone. The gift tax will hit you in the ***.

exactly.

BUT you also need:

- a 130-U application for texas certificate of title filled out by the seller and buyer. you can get it at any tax offic and it has all the basic info on the vehicle, both of you guys, signatures, and the selling price for taxes. you can put whatever price you want on it, but you will need it to get it registered. make sure they sign it in the right places!

-before you get it registered, you'll need to get it inspected here in texas and ask for a "green form" that you will take back to the tax office. this verifies the vin, mileage, and that its legal to drive, yada, yada, yada.

i bought a bike in florida a while back and it was an easy transaction except that i forgot to get that form signed and had to mail it back for the seller to sign and send back. luckily he did, otherwise i'd be screwed.

and since there is soooooo much bike theft going on, make sure the vin matches the title, don't assume it will. if the frame is polished and doesn't have the tag on the side, it still should be stamped by the steering head.

ok so what if i bought my bike for cash, from some dude in TX. If i wanted to get it registered how could I go about getting around the sales tax when i get the title transfered in my name? I spoke with someone the other day and they said that I had to pay like 490 dollars...lol

its no different, except that you don't need the green form since its already inspected & registered in texas. they'll tax you based on the selling price thats on the form. used vehicle sales tax is the biggest rip off, so i have no problem fudgeing the sale price, they never bothered me about it, just don't say you bought an '05 for $100.
