Default Steering shaft problem

My steering shaft has popped off the rack twice now in the past 3 months. It disconnects at the spot where the 11mm bolt clamps the shaft onto the rack.

It only happens when making a really sharp turn in my driveway, but it has be very worried

Anyone have some input/solutions?

nothing at all. The bolt is just there to clamp the 2 pieces together, right?

The whole shaft pops off the stub and i lose steering.

Yes and also ...

There is a small indention on the rack splined stub.

If you look into the collar of the steering shaft you will see the bolt actually breaks the plane of the circle.

The bolt goes through that indention.

I don't think you are pushing the collar onto the steering rack stub far enough.

Just to clarify ... you have to completely remove the bolt from the collar before it will fit down all the way.

I think this may be the cause of our problem, something to check into thats for sure. We really need to get this issue solved before the car sees the track!

We are messing with it right now. The steering shaft travels the same distance onto the stub with the bolt in and out.

It doesn't matter if the bolt is on or not.

When tightening the bolt , the steering shaft tries to pop off the stub.

Take a picture of the stub, you may have broken it off above the slot where the bolt rides in it.

If you remove that bolt and slide the shaft on without it, you'll only be able to see a perfect hole all the way through it untill that slot is lined up just right. It helps to get someone to wiggle the wheel while you're sliding it down.

BTW - Are you sure those hung-like-bull headers aren't hitting it when you crank her over all the way?

The stub is def not broken, we were just down there lookin at it. Will try an get a pic, my cameras not here we'll have to find Danny's.

It may be possible the headers are interfering when the wheel is turned tight, thats next on the list to investigate.

The shaft is too short.. it needs to be about 1/2 an inch longer and i have already loosened the 2nd bolt to lengthen it.

I searched and found 'slowhawk' to have had the same problem.

If this is infact the case(which i'm 99% sure it is) me and BMR are going to have some major issues.

If you are running a manual rack the shaft has to be 1/2 inch longer. If you can slide the bottom connection on the rack with the bolt in it the bolt is too small in diameter.
