Oswalt Deal
Finally, the Astros made a smart move.
5 years and 73 mil aint bad. I think he should have taken em for more, but 14.6 a year isnt bad.

season isnt over yet. the heart attack kids are at it again. i gotta admit. havin these insanely close wild card races for the third straight year is pretty damn exciting. i think i'd rather have it this way than a blowout season and easy trip to the playoffs. it's worth the scattered bouts of frustration to me. just means our playoffs start a little earlier.

The Astros were 6 games out of the wild card at the end of July. If they're 3 games out at the end of August, there is no reason to count them out. These guys are worse than my senior prom date.
Glad to see they locked up Roy Oswalt. When I heard his name in trade rumors, I thought they had lost their minds for sure. Part of me feels like making the playoffs would be the worst thing for them right now. If they make the playoffs, Purpura and McLane will be able to say, "See? We're not that far off. We made the playoffs with this team." If they don't make the playoffs, they might be more willing to make some bigger changes.

but, if we make the playoffs then those guys will be right
Big changes don't always help, you aren't counting in the morale factor or the leadership factor when you lose some of these guys that aren't performing like normal.

Great move by the Astros to get him signed. If you let him go much longer without an extension the more prone he'd be to test free agent market... and we wouldn't outbid the Yankees, Red Sox, or Mets.
I think you'll see contracts with Carlos Lee and Pettitte in the offseason. Then it's decision time if we're going to pay Huff or see if Ensberg can turn it around.

i think you have a point. but i think they will have to make changes anyways with the contracts of clemens, pettitte, and bagwell off the books. hell, that is $47,797,435 worth of free agent money. this all will happen if they make the playoffs or not.

Neither one can hit with runners in scoring position.
I don't think they need to scrap the entire team and start over, but they need offensive help. I love Everett defensively, and Ausmus is like having a coach on the field. However, having two .230ish hitters in the lineup is lethal. I'd like to see them upgrade one or both, preferrable Ausmus, simply because Everett is one of the big reasons they lead the majors in double plays.
They've already lost their leadership when Bagwell went down.

Can we live with the best defensive shortstop in the game if he only bats .230? Yes, if you're getting production in the top and middle of the lineup.
They need to address the backup catcher role. Having a backup catcher that can come in and hit would be nice. Start him every so often and substitue him in for Ausmus late in games.

i agree....we have to get consistant production from someone in the middle of the lineup besides puma. there has to be someone in baseball that can be a good backup catcher.....purpura just has to find him.

Honestly, I could care less if they make the playoffs this year. I mean, ya, I would like to see them playing in October but do they really have a chance against any of the AL teams?
Im just waiting for next season. Hopefully, they come to their senses and sign lock up Huff for a couple more years, and I really think they're gonna make a move on Carlos Lee, and from what I've been reading, Houston has the inside track on him.
Berkman,Lee,Huff and Scott could do good things.
