Default Is it okay to run with open headers for a while?

will it hurt anything to run the open LT headers for a few days to a few weeks or so?

I need to take my duals off for a bit. So will it hurt anything?

you will have lower gas mileage and risk backfiring. You will lose some hp toooo!

Yeah i always heard you dont need to go around flooring the damn thing all the time cause you might screw a valve up. I could be completley wrong though.

You are right, my little *** 2.0 liter neon broke the exhaust flex joint in front of the cat. I ordered the new downpipe and cat from chrysler but it got put on backorder. One night i raced with my neon with no exhaust on and at the end of the quarter mile i let off the gas from 5500 rpm. Backfired like 10 feet past my rear bumper. Long story short 6 months later i have to rip apart my head and see whats wrong with my valvetrain.

Significantly lower gas mileage along with bucking and poor rpm control at low speeds. What is happening here is that by dumping all the exhaust pressure and heat right at the collector, your O2s see a form of "exhaust reversion" where cooler ambient air will contaminate true exhaust sampling for the O2s. In effect, you will create a false lean burn, and the PCM will compensate by adding fuel. Usually, even on a stock internal vehicle, open headers are enough to max out a closed loop fuel adjustment. You'll be dumping a ton of fuel you don't need, and I don't think i need to elaborate on what happens when you flood a vehicle with too much fuel. If you have to do it, these are the conditions, though I would not recommend doing it for long or at all for that matter.

I did it for like a week, and that was the shittiest week I've ever been through in my life. Besides how loud it is, one of my o2's got screwed up, and I didn't have my laptop for that whole week, so I couldn't even adjust for any kind of fuel trims. Not to mention people would cover their ears when I drove by, and all my neighbors were pissed off at me even when I would idle through the neighborhood.

Oh yeah, and normally I get about 160 miles to a tank, and on that tank, I barely made it to 100.

Pluss if it is cold out, after you shut the engine down, if cold air gets up the headers at a fast rate, it may crack or worp a valve. Example, if it is windy out and dumb luck has it the wind is actually blowing into the collectors.

Yes, I do mostly in town driving. Ms4 cam with a 4200 stall, and 4.10 gears. I can get about another 1 mpg on the highway, but the 4.10's screw me a little bit on that part as well.

I ran open y-pipe for a while because the bolts on my I-pipe to y-pipe connection kept coming loose. While it was open I would average around 200 miles to a tank and driving the car just sucked unless you had it floored. Got everything bolted back together, and boom. It was like I was driving a completly different car. I could easily get 300 miles to a tank, and its part throttle manners were a lot better. In other words, I wouldnt do it unless you had to.

This is no joke. I rolled open headers on my truck for a day while waiting for my y-pipe and it was extremely loud. Every time I pulled up to a stop light, I would be next to someone about 90 years old. Damn they can give some shitty looks. lol. But yes, significantly worse gas mileage and you do run the risk of valve damage. I would go very easy on it, resist the temptation of a WOT run with open headers.

Oh yeah, it is a good idea to unplug the O2's if you are going to run open headers. Goes back to what the other guy said about dumping a lot of fuel and it will cause it to smoke like a bitch. Plus removing the O2's will improve the idle and overall driveability a bit. But its still going to be tough.

I can understand the cold air bening a valve thing on stock headers, but I thought since LONG TUBES are so long, the air gradually cools

So what's the point of cut-outs then? Wouldn't that be the same thing? I see folks with cut-outs just past the headers on the y-pipe. I've never heard of them having any problems. But then again, I don't know JACK about exhaust evacuation. I am running through my cut-out right now, but it is back on the I pipe just behind the passenger seat. It is loud, but the performance difference is ten fold and I get better gas mileage. I guess it's all in where the gas is going to escape.

Extensions of 12-18 inches long are recommended.

That's exactly what I did after my week of horror... extensions in the form of mufflers.

Eh, it's NEVER a good idea to remove O2s regardless of any setup. You fueling is determined by default on a closed loop feedback system from the O2s, without any activity whatsoever you PCM would have no clue what to do. The best solution is to force open loop fueling, and stay off the throttle, but most people do not have the ability to do this (need tuning software). I lied, the best solution is DON'T RUN OPEN HEADERS.
