SAPD has crashed their 'copter something like 3 times in the last few years.
They'd better be good at it by now!

yea...they supposedly practice autorotation several times in the older aircraft and will actually shutoff the engine a ways off of the ground so the practice pilot gets a feel of what its like. that way if it actually happens, training kicks in...theoretically

Lucky guys, but nice work for landing on the skids.

I'm kinda suprised at the guys with wings or (rotors ) in here too.

we need a flight thread i guess.

That's not how you auto-rotate a helicopter. The engine has a free wheeling clutch which is engaged during auto-rotation to keep the rotor speed up so that the engine doesn't drag the rotor speed down, then the pilot engages the rotors and adds blade pitch which gives him lift and slows him down during transitional flight(close to the ground). Helicopters don't fly, they beat the air into submission.

I thought it was kind of funny when they were interviewing the crew member, he was pissed because the rescue team was more concerned about the helicopter than him, lol.

i thought that they let it fall to get the rotors spinning and then tilt them back at the last second to try and give a split second lift before making contact with the ground. of course all this while pumpin the pedals to keep from spinning around...itd be easier discussed in person for sure, thats just the way i have understood it although never really researched...any better way you could explain in detail?

I don't think that was a crew member of the crashed helicopter. He was saying that the pilots(who were in the hospital) were worried more about the helicopter and the chase than themselves.
