I'm sure it is the best place to go if you want to unload a car. Thats for one reason, they will buy it without selling you something else. Now if you have flexibility and can afford 50 bucks in the autotrader, you can easily sell a car yourself for more than wholesale and sell it relatively quickly. On a 98 Ford Festiva, its not worth the effort. But on an 02 Yukon, it was a 4000 dollar difference in my pocket.

I have bought 7 cars in the last 2.5 years, 4 of them from dealers. I traded in the first one on the second one, but only because they gave me what I wanted for each vehicle. I have my financing (when financed) taken care of outside of the lot beforehand, so I shop for price.

The other 3 dealer purchases, I gave them the opportunity to give me what I wanted in trade, but we didn't get there, so I sold it outright within a few weeks and went on my way.

I couldn't afford to go through cars like I do if I shopped for payments and took it in the *** on every deal. I'm not necessarily making money, but I'm not losing more than the taxes and fees and a small amount.

I'm just saying that if you insist on trading in your car, carmax is not a bad option for people who aren't that savvy about buying/trading cars. I personally wouldn't go there because as I mentioned before, I sell my cars pp and can get GM employee prices + rebates on new cars. No haggling. I bought my wife a 2004 Envoy for only 24k (sticker was 31k) and didn't even have to haggle.
Wholesale isn't top dollar as you indicated in your first post. Wholesale is what your car is expected to bring at auction. I would consider NADA trade in top dollar and KBB/Edmunds trade in a fair deal.

Of course I didn't expect to get retail. I didn't expect anything, its a damn car lot.

Well, you misunderstood me then. Of course they aren't going to give you top dollar. How would they make any money? I meant top dollar FOR A TRADE-IN. And several other people in this thread have made the same comment. Sure, you can get more from some dealerships depending on what car you are buying with your trade.

I guess top trade-in and auction prices are the same thing

Why do people honestly think that a car dealership is going to offer you anywhere CLOSE to retail for your trade in? Thats obserd. Every dealership I've seen, including car-max, will start from a loan value, and work its way up. You think theyre going to dish out Retail, and then automaticlly take a loss for it on the lot? Your nuts.

Your taking the side of the dealership, No one is on your side here. It's not about what the dealership is offering, it's about making more of a profit by not trading it in. The only problem is the convience of it. Most folks can't cover the difference of the loan value. Why don't you tell them the advantages of an in and a out. I tried to briefly explain it. So that is the bottom line. Oh so what happened to the Acura's on here. .

My point is Trade Vs. Selling it out right. It's not about holding your title. It's about how much you will get for you car.
So would you trade it just because you have the title?

When I bought my new (in 04) GMC, the sale was made in less than 10 mins, I **** you not. I told them I wouldnt pay over "invoice" and still wanted the $4k in rebates & a bed liner. THey agreed, because theyre still keeping holdback. I started to walk out during financing. I told them I had my own CU financing and the Fi guy added all kinds of BS and played with the sales price. For ex, Fi guy took sticker, added TT&L, BS "dealer pkgs/paint sealeant/etc, and even charged for the free liner, then subtracted rebates.

After a couple of rounds of this, I told him that I was going to walk out if the next order didnt show agreed inv-$4k rebates-my GM card rebates. OF course it didnt, he told me it was the LAW to add TT&L to sticker price then subtract rebates. ME & my g/f got up to walk out as the sale person walked in with some Cokes and asked if everything was ok. She ended up chewing the Fi guys *** in fornt of us (prolly pat of the game once they realized I wasnt ingnorant) and everything was done correctly.

BUT I think the Fi guy may have been new, because he NEVER faxed the PO to my CU. <shrug>

In short, its not always the sales dept that sux.....watch out for Finacing as bad chicken said, they will play the #'s and rape you....
