The dealer is cheating??
I was looking at a Chevy truck last night and they appraised my SS for trade in. When he came back from the office he told me he looked up how much I paid for my car, and because of that he could only offer me $9000. (I got him to raise it to $10,000, but it still isn't enough) I bought the car used from another GM dealer, so it would make sense that he has access to that info.
But the more I think about it, the more it pisses me off - it's none of his business how much I paid for my car. Do I get to look up how much they paid for their truck?
The Ford dealer only was offering me $8,000 (I didn't like the way the Ford rides, though) The Dodge dealer is offering me $12,500 (the Dodge truck had the nicest ride of all three)
Neither Ford nor Dodge can look up how much I paid for my car, and I can't look up how much ANY dealer REALLY paid for their truck.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
They will play with the numbers if you tell them about the other dealer who offered you a low trade, then they will raise the price the truck.
Here is my personal opinion, Your car is worth around 12-14k and you should sell it to someone on auto trader for that amount.
There is a very funny car sales movie called Suckers. It explains alot.
Funny you should mention that...the salesman at the Chevy place suggested I take my car there.

1. you have to buy a car during close out, which means at the end of the month. That is when the pressure is on.
2. Don't let them run your credit until you agree on numbers. It lowers your beacon score everytime you run it. If you want me to lay out the game. I can pm you. I can take you through the whole scheme. I only want to get you what you want and how you want it.
1. It's starts off by saying what brings you to this car lot? Not can i help you.
2. Never let them know your monthly, because they will extend your terms and make the most money. It's a triangle game. they call it a short term high equity. any way the bottom line is, it doesn't matter if they give you 5k for it, as long as A+b=z
and more thing, unless your going to keep the truck, look at the highest resale.

I almost goofed and told one guy what my payments were, but managed to avoid that mistake.
I agree with you 100% on the A+B=z thing. I've got my own numbers in each of those, and so far I have NOT caved in on any of them. I know my budget, and I know how to make an excel spreadsheet calculate a payment. What I CANNOT figure out is why my calculations NEVER match what the dealer comes up with.
As far as resale, my plan is to drive it till the wheels fall off, then put new wheels on and keep going...When I get it paid off I'll get me another go fast car and alternate on odd an even days, or rainy and sunny days, or whatever...
If you have any suggestions on how I can get them to lower their prices, please drop me a note!!

I know what you mean by the dealers try to rip you off. Its standard practice for them. I just expect it anymore.
I've been trying to buy a new Avalanche for months now. Everytime I go in, they manage to **** me off somehow. I always leave with a migrane..
Why don't they just come steal our furniture instead? I mean, seriously, it wouldn't hurt so much..
They got the car hustling down to a science. They know all the right things to say, games to play, they've done it many times.
The best thing you can do is do your homework and read up on some books on these types of things and how to beat them at their own game. A $12.95 book can save you thousands.

They are usually pretty good about getting you all the update information on rebates, what others are paying, etc...
A dealership is a business, business's are around to make money. Don't go in there expecting to get reail to your trade it. They start at Loan Value, and work thier way up...
This goes right to my point - it's none of their business, and besides, can I look up how much they REALLY paid for their truck?
My favorite line they spew is, " My manager tells me that he would buy a car like yours today for _ _ _ _" To which a response is....yeah...I bet he would!
Like others have said, everyone understands that a business is there to make a profit but....car sales folks will try and screw everyone, in every way possible.
Personally, I always tell them;
Look, I'm your favorite customer. I don't care if your _ _ _ _ is a million dollars, just means I want 99X, XXX.00 for my trade in....hell, I'm a payment shopper...get the payments where I want and I'll drive the bitch home today!!
I usually get funny looks right after that but, has worked pretty well over the years.

I had a $2,000 variance on trade value with my old 99 Silverado years ago. Tried buying a Lightning and was upside down massively, bought an SS Camaro and miraculously I had equity.
I dropped a lengthy PM in your box.....
Yeah, I look around a lot, but the other half keeps catching me looking

I still have a year of warranty (transferrable, but probably only in private sales) on the thing...I may wait till end of the year closeout next year. But we'll see what happens.
