We can't shoot them. I've already asked.

OK, rant over. Advice below:

If you want to intelligently compare cost of living, don't ask for random opinions on here. Go to www.homefair.com

I wasn't just asking about housing, I was also asking about available jobs.

You evidently didn't go to the website.

You were asking about cost of living. Go to the website. It is a cost of living calculator. You put in your current salary and where you are living now, then you enter the location you want to compare it to and it will tell you what you need to earn to maintain the same lifestyle.

Being that I just moved to houston from Cali (central coast) this is my take on it.

Im a Graphic Designer and my wife does accounting. Both of us ended up making more then what we made back in Cali. My wife almost doubled her salary.

With in a year we were able to buy a brand new 4 bedroom home at just under 2000sq ft for $150,000.

As for taxes well there is no state tax but dont let that make you think you arnt going to pay the state. Property taxes are high and unlike Cali as your house value goes up your taxes will go up they do not freeze at the the price when you buy the home.

As for how people drive. Well I would take LA driving any day. It seems most Texans think they own the road and are the only ones on it. They drive where ever they want to get where they want to go. No patience what so ever. But it is funny because when they talk about a freeway doing stop and go its not like in LA. in LA you stop and go here its more slow and go but the roads do get some getting use too.

Dont think you are getting away from danger. Now coming from the Central Coast it was pretty quiet so for us moving to a large city it is some what of a shock but It seems that there is at least one if not more murders per day in Houston.

As for weather well it gets hot being you are from down south you may be a little more use to it. But we just looked at it like well it gets hot o well we own our house.

As for emmisions well they are just as strick here in Houston as they are in Cali if not more. In Cali you get a smog check every two years. Here it is every year along with a safty inspection which is a joke. They check your lights, windshield wiper blades, tires and not sure what else. Its nothing but a money making thing. There are inspection places on every corner. And if you start looking at the cars on the road it seems over half of them should have failed inspections yet they have brand new stickers in thier spider craked windshield. Plus the inspections are not connected to your registration which it would be nice if they were then they could just do one sticker in your window. O and you will love the stickers they want to stick in your front window. They dont do the stickers on the plates because they get stolen.

true, true.... Houston is so cheap compaired to Calli. that some stupid *** was trying to sell his home for 300k in a 100k neighborhood... Since it didn't sell he burnt it down. So now I have to look at this ugly pink brick burnt up home till the investigation is done... ******.

I moved down here in June '05 from Northern California (Los Gatos) where my folks pad is nearly a mil for a not so special 4 bd 2 and half bed 2400 sq ft ranch. I live North of Houston in a 4bd 2 and a half bath 2600 sq ft brand new 2 story house which cost 200K. The taxes suck but there is absolutely no comparing Cali to Texas. You're dollar goes alot further out here bro. I can't really say how much your personal lifestyle will run you out here but I'm nearly positive it will be considerably less.

The Frisco/Allen/McKinney area is a nice new area. South Lake, Grapevine and Flower Mound are also very nice areas in the Metroplex.

Edit: Forgot to mention PlainHoe.

Never seen that link before Tony. It basically fits the trend I see personnally when I go home to visit Chicago vs being here in Texas.

I like Texas. The cost of living is cheaper in most area's. Some parts of Texas the cost of living isn't way cheaper, but you have to just look around.

You can also look to live just outside the major cities and commuting isn't as bad as what I've had to deal with before.
