Default Bought a 70 Camaro, possible title problems

Picked up a '70 Camaro in Dallas this past weekend, but the deal wasn't as smooth as I'd have liked. The first questions I asked when I contacted the seller was if the title was clean and in his name. Long story short, I got there, and he had a clean title in hand but it was from the previous owner (never bothered to transfer it to his name).

Now, he hadn't signed the 'buyer' section of it, so I thought no big deal, but then I noticed there was an area under the original owner's signature for a notary (and it wasn't notarized). He replied that Texas doesn't require titles to be notarized any more (this is a 20+ something year old Texas title) so "there isn't a problem".

I do know that titles issued in the last ~10 years aren't notarized when transfers take place, but would an older title need to be notarized if it had a section for it? I'll call TX DOT after work, but I wanted to see if anyone here knew the answer off hand ... Don't want to get stuck with a bonded title for the next 3 years.

Titles aren't notarized in TX, usually just the bill of sale is. If it is the original title (not a duplicate) I wouldn't worry about the seller not having it in his name. Just type up a bogus bill of sale with the previous owner's name and address on it. You won't need it notarized if it isn't for a loan. The seller you got it from shouldn't have his name mentioned anywhere, just pretend you bought it from the first guy. Sign his sig with your left hand, haha.

Nine Ball,

Thanks for the info - just what I wanted to hear. It's an original title signed by the owner w/ the buyer section left blank, so it sounds like I should be in good shape.

Ouch, what a mess. Bought a '86 Yamaha Virago 700cc motorcycle in college from a guy who never got the title transfered into his name. I was riding the thing home, and the title flew out of my backpack on mopac! Had to get a copy of the original title, and then go through the trouble of tracking the original owner down. Turned out he was a grad student who lived on my street, on the same block and just few houses down! When I called him up and explained what had happened, he said he walked by the bike every day for the last few weeks, and wondered if it was his old bike
