Theres a lot of jobs out there, theres also a lot of jobs you would have never though exisited but pay really well. You just gotta look at it carefully, some jobs pay awesome but...you will be working 90 hours a week, so when you do the math, your not really getting paid that great for the sacrafices you have to make.

You have it better than you think. Guys that wrench on cars all day would probably rather sit at a desk in the A/C and make six figures. Plus, most of them hate working on cars after a while, and get burned out on it. The only cars I'd want to work on are custom hotrods and big-dollar musclecars. At least it would be a variety.

I think keeping cars as a hobby has made them more enjoyable.

Believe me, I know that I have it great. I don't want to be turning wrenchs at the local Chevy dealership, I want to be doing exactly what you said.

I may have spoke too soon, as I drove home yesterday I was thinking and I guess this job does kinda make my hobbies more attainable. I guess it is in how you look at it. I think my job is a means to an end.

I stil stand by my statement of try and do what you enjoy though. It makes you and everyone around you happier.

I love how one of my majors is at the top of that list. It makes me feel good

I am dual majoring in chemistry and chemical engineering. It is sooo much work, but it will be worth it.

Eh. There's really no point in double majoring. It doesn't really provide any benefit beyond the nostalgia of having two majors, especially in this case.

After growing up working beside my dad who was a dealer mechanic and then opening our own shop fifteen years ago working on cars for a living is not fun in any way. That is a huge motivator for me going back to school a few years ago. I enjoy going in to help on Friday's and on the weekends it's not too bad then. I especially enjoy wrenching on my own stuff but for a living no way. A lot of these guys have great advice listen to it all then forge your own path.

Well, I started off as a chem major with a 2/3 engineering program. You take a lot of classes that give credit for either major and when you finish the chemistry, you actually have 2/3 of the engineering. So... that is the only reason why i'm doing the dual major.

It's working out well for me since it's incorporating a wide range of the things i like into my studies. If i were to drop anything, it would be the chemical engineering since my real passion is chemistry.... but i doubt it would ever come to that.

I see. Well, it's good that they overlap, but I doubt you'll see much of a benefit after you graduate. But who knows? I'm really just regurgitating what I've been told.

Def what he just said...I use to think I wanted to wrench but I quickly realized that I like "modifying" cars, I don't like working on them AT ALL.

Man Bane...what you do is only part of my job and I damn sure ain't makin' 6 figures. *Takes another sip of the haterade!*

Who do you work for?

One of the biggest reasons my money is so good is they couldn't find anyone else to run Primavera that would come to this shithole

Plus I am up here in MN.......been below zero with windchill anywhere from 15-40 below for a week.

Like I said though, I have thought some more about it and I am a REALLY lucky SOB I guess I was just pissed yesterday. You guys are right, once your hobby becomes your job, it loses alot of it's appeal.

I am on contract to the second largest ethanol producer in the country. We are building a new plant and I am being asked to reinvent the wheel from their previous plants.

LOL, that would be career suicide if you drop-kicked ChemE and kept chemistry. If those additional classes to get the Chem degree are slowing down your graduation date, figure that costs you about $30K per semester that you could already be earning as a ChemE.

Get the ChemE degree, then go buy yourself a chemistry kit and play at home, lol.

What's so bad about a chem degree? I think with a chem degree i could do a wide variety of things, depending on which chem i focused on.

ChE >>> Ch

Trust me. I'm more than 3/4 through with my ChE program and it's the best of both worlds. If you're good at math and enjoy problem solving stick with ChE. I'll elaborate more when I get back. It's I.M. gametime

Did you even read this thread and go to that link I posted?

What is at the TOP of that list? And what degree doesn't even show up on it

That list is nothing more than a few blowhards at CNN guessing at a few salaries and a list for engineers to hang their hats on to make themselves feel better. My degree isn't listed there either and my starting salary was much more than the top listed salary.

I wouldn't take that list as a be-all/end-all.
