What most people do not understand about selling a car is what it is worth to the bank. Example would be an 01 Z28 with 73000 miles on the clock is only worth $9500 person to person, trade in is less. The car is 6 years old already and new cost, what $26k or so. depreciation value is $5k right when you drive off the lot, so the banks figures that in. If you can't find someone to pay the difference in cash 15k will be too much for a bank to loan, they will only loan up to the amount of what the book says the value is, not what we think the value is. Hope this helps

Wow, I was thinking alot lower then some of the numbers you guys are throwing out there. I was thinking I'd be lucky as hell to get even 10,000 out of her. I realize the the only way to get the money's worth out of the sale would be to sell it to a car enthusiast (most likely someone thats already owned an Fbody or knows exactly what to expect with mods).
The questions is: Is it worth it to hold out for the "right" buyer, or should i just take a weekend or two out of my life and swap her back to nearly stock and part her out and trade her in.
Brent - i think the times come ... she's great going 0-100 on an entrance ramp, but living 2.5 miles from work - the car barely gets a chance to get up to temp before i'm turning her off in the parking garage. I'll keep ya up to date on whats goin on ...

You guys should read these suggestions, they have been very accurate for me, and I've bought/sold several of these cars. My main advice would be to try and purchase cars that are popular, such as special editions and rare/popular colors. This allows you to sell them later pretty easily. Base model Z28s are the most difficult to get money out of, unless they are a rare and popular color like Hugger orange, sunset orange, navy blue. People tend to pay a little more for those colors.

yea, nice link. i didn't realize prices on our cars dropped so much in the past 6 to 8 months. when i was looking about a year ago, i couldn't find anything for less than 17k that was in good shape with less than 50k miles. then again that was M6 cars. what do you think will happen when the new camaro comes out...will our cars hit rock bottom or regain some value?

New Camaro won't depreciate these 4th gens much at all, if any. It will already have been 7 years between them, so the depreciation would already have bottomed out by then. You will find that clean examples of 4th gens with lower mileage will still hover in the 10-15K range for a while. Once several become higher mileage, expect them to bottom out around $6-7K in clean condition.

I paid $750 for my 98 Z from the insurance auction...... After being under Katrina water for about 2 weeks. (lol) But on a more serious note now that she's together and near completion (shy of paint and a little elbow grease) I had a 3900 offer and 4200 (after testing the waters on ebay) Keep in mind too mine is a salvage title which means it's not worth crap even if it were absolutely perfect. I'll just keep it as a nice daily driver on the side. Crazy thing is I've seen some F body's at the insurance auction damaged but not flooded and still somewhat drivable bringing in 3800 +/-, and low mile WS6's bring 6-7K. Go figure, I guess it all comes down to if it's a desirable item to the buyer.
