Default MTI 427 oil consumption problem

My roommate is getting concerned there is something seriously wrong with his MTI built 427 vette. the car is burning about a quart every hundred miles or so, and the "low oil" text continusly comes up. is this normal for a stroker of this size or is something seriously wrong with the car? trying to get some ideas before we just have it towed over to MTI for them to start pulling **** apart to figure out whats wrong.

Is it still under warranty? Sometimes the PCV system is the culprit. Forged pistons also expand more than hypereutectic pistons, and can sometimes let oil pass into the combustion chamber until they are at full operating temps.

unfortunatly it isnt under warranty. when he got the car last summer it already had the Z07 package on the car. there warranties arent transferable. i wasnt aware forged pistons did that, learn something new everyday on this site! thanks for the info Nine Ball.

Most high performance engines require more attention, but it is certainly not normal for forged pistons to allow for that kind of oil consumption--unless they have a few holes in them--1qt/100miles. Something is definitely not right. Do some searching and check the easy things: noticeable leaks in the engine bay/ground, check the PCV system, exhaust color/smells, etc.

Good luck. What kind of shape was the car (motor) in when he bought it? How long has he had it? Does it run ok? Sprayed?

I would be suspicious of the head gasket

Aren't re-sleeved motors notorious for this?

the car is in great shape other then the oil problem and a problem with the gas gauge lol it sometimes reads empty when the tank is full. there is no performance loss, so thats comforting. it just seems to burn a pissload of oil.
thanks for the replys. keep the ideas comeing.

Do a leak down test... When you pull the plugs inspect for oil on them.

Head gaskets do not cause oil loss, they only cause coolant loss. If the head gaskets were bad, there would be coolant in the oil pan, and the oil would look like a creamy milkshake.

I knew that. I was just testing to see if anyone would catch it.

I would not worry too much about it. My car loves to "USE" oil. It all turns up in my catch can, I dont burn oil. If I beat on the car or if I drive it sustained 90mph which is about 2800rpm with my 4.10s the oil just flys away. As long as there is no smoke I would not sweat it.

Keep in mind that if you are "burning" oil as bad as you claim, there would be tons of smoke following you around when you drive it. I'd suspect the PCV setup first if the car isn't smoking badly.

IMO, people that think 1qt/100mi is ok are just trying to convince themselves they don't have a problem. That is a TON of oil no matter where the oil is going. That's over 2 gallons every 1k miles .

Does the car hav e a catch can?

If your buddycan afford it, just take it to MTI and have them look at it. If not, keep searching .

I didn`t build a high dollar motor to burn lots of oil, that would suck! So far so good on my 408!

Any engine that burns that much oil has serious problems. Forged pistons shouldn't use anymore oil than stock pistons, this isn't 1970.
