as bad as he seems to be, he's still better than most the closers in the league. He's proved he can dominate a full season and everyone is going to hold him to that standard. He blew 6 saves last year, 4 in 05, 4 in 04 and 5 in 03. not that big a difference, they just came in grand fashion

First of all, not all major league clubs have a "closer," so that could possibly be a little misleading.
Second of all, name me one (or more) closer that is worse than Lidge.
I can think of maybe one or two, but to say that he's better than most of the closers in the league is inaccurate, I think. Let's discuss.

A difference of two more blown saves from the previous year IS a substantial difference when you consider we only missed the playoffs by 1.5 games.
Blown saves cannot be the only stat you look at when attempting to prove (or disprove) his inadequacy as a closer. He has given up WAY more hits, runs, and walks than ever before. Which translates into him being totally unreliable. Not a quality you want in a closer.
My $.02.

This man gets it.
Also, look at the starting pitcher...like Roy O., who goes 7 innings to hold a lead. They count on their "closers" to finish the job. ND's are something that a pitcher DOESN'T want. I don't know how Roy O, Clemens, and Pettite didn't slap the **** out of relievers last season.....and I wouldn't be surprised to see Lidge slapped this year.
