this mostly seemed to be a big arguing point for the 350 guys who wanted to go 383, or the 400sbc guys who wanted to see just how far they could go... mostly truck motors, and from what I remember, the 3rdgen F-Bodies and 4th gen Vettes all had 2 bolt mains, and everyone wanted to put a TPI unit onto a 400ci sbc but ran into problems (like the TPI not being worth a **** after 5200rpm even on a 350 regardless of cam for the most part) ... not to mention the L98 heads just didn't seem to work on 400's too often...

but what does that guy know? he drives an orange Escort with a skull on the hood ...
as far as a simple bolt on to boost yourself to that range... any idiot could go and buy a 250 shot and install it himself for about a grand and still have the **** look reasonably stock if it's done properly (especially on a carbed car with one of those nifty Air Gap edelbrock intakes that you can just stuff all sorts of fun **** into that gap, and a large air filter to boot.
