I got one installed in my TaurusSHO about 10 years ago when I got it. I got one installed in my WS6 when I first got it in 2000. To make a long story short, I got towed by a wrecker truck driver (one of the ones that make the rest of them look like vultures, *ickheads etc, but I know many of them are nice normal individuals like us citizens, cops and such). I happened to feel uneasy about parking my car in an apartment complex parking lot because I know it's just pure easy picking for punks. I went out to the balcony, low and behold my car was gone. I called the lojack which in turn told me to call the police and with the 15 minutes of the conversation with them (are you insured? color? keys in car? your address? are you in a hurry to answer all these questions?) I think I waited about another 40 minutes. I finally and surprisingly got a call because I wasnt sure that these things really work. A female officer called and told me that they found my car that it was in a storage lot (No I was not parked in anybody's parking place, but I backed in my car like I ALWAYS back my car in and so were another 10 cars like that, but that's another story). I got to my car before they even had time to process the paper work. It costed me I believe $650 for each, no monthly monitoring, $35 a year for them to come out and check to see if your back up battery is ok. And here is a tip, they tell you that your not allowed to see where the hide the little chalk size gadget in but most of the time I think they try to hide it in the tail light area. I think I got a 10 % insurance discount.

I have recovered several vehicles with Lowjack. Most recently a Dodge truck. Low and behold there was another stolen vehicle right next to it, Dodge Durango. It seems lately when a car is stolen they will take it to an apartment complex and let it sit for a few days to see if it is tracked. I like the system alot. In Houston we have a few cars with the tracking system and all the helicopters. Check with the local police to ensure they have the ability to track it prior to your purchase.

I would also check into a GPS type system. OnStar is very good, but of course you have to have it installed prior to purchase. The difference between the two is that OnSatr can tell you what street and what direction they are traveling and LowJack is just an arrow that points in a direction of the vehicle. I believe that there are some other types out there that the market to parents to track there children. No idea of the cost on that.

I've learned working in parts that there may be extreme variations between very similar vehicles. On Star is definitely built into the car. I'm not sure that they would allow you to subscribe to the services even if you did install all the equipment. I was looking into it for my '96 Yukon when I worked parts at GM, and all the stuff that goes along with adding On Star is just plain expensive, labor intensive and difficult to acquire. Sorry to be such a bummer, but they won't even offer dealer-installed On Star. They have to leave the factory with it.

There is another option: http://www.mymobileguardian.com/
This is what I have on my car: cost for the unit & install: $600, no monthly fee. And 20% + discount on part of the insurance..

You know, I had another one of my crazy ideas. What if you bought a cheap cell phone that has a GPS chip in it. Have you seen the Boost Mobile commercials? "Where you at?" "You know where I'm at"

Just hard wire it up to the battery along with it's own isolated battery in case the main battery is disconnected. If it's stolen you should be able to find it as long as it is in range of a cell phone tower. The phones are cheap and you can get a $35/month plan. Maybe have a remote LED that shows the phone is powered up and on. I doubt the power draw would run down the battery as they can go for days with their own tiny battery.

Damn, didnt know they went up to that much since about 10 years ago but everythings bound to increase obviously. Do they still do the $35 a year check up to make sure your backup battery is in order? If not what is the charge now?

Not a bad idea and you even have an emergency phone in case you lose whats on you now. (considering you remember where you hid it)

I've got LoJack on my car... at least that's what the original owner told me 6 years ago...

I called up LoJack the other day just to find out what I needed to know, just in case my car was ever stolen... Turns out, I do have it on the car, but apparently it needs to be transferred into my name so they want an additional $100 sent to them so they can activate it in my name... such B.S.

I think Lojack is an awesome idea, but grimlock you're not supposed to tell people you have it and especially not where the transmitter is located

then people know they need to take it out and exactly where to find it if they decide to steal your car
