Default Thinking of getting an offshore job

So i know alot of you do off shorework. Is there anything special i should look for? I have never done that kind of work, but i am a certified welder. Well used to be i just need to renew it and retake the tests....

But im burnt out on my job and need something with a lot less "kiss the customers *** till he gets off" and a lil more "show up work all day and get paid good"

So if anyone has any information i would love it. And i just wanna say thanks..

I work offshore in NDT (inspections) and it pays good but it sucks most of the time, gone alot. I dont work for a drilling company so the job may last 1 day or 38 days but you never know what your getting into.

i really dont mind being gone, as of right now i work a crap load and come home take a shower eat food, go to bed, get up and do it again. I would rather work 28 days and have two weeks off or something like that.

If you are a welder, I'd recommend getting on at one of the many fabrication shops here in Houston. There is always a shortage of good welders.

Yea....what 9 ball said. You can always find a grave yard shift where you dont have to worry about customers, just the boss. I used to work graveyard in a machine shop that had welders there and it was pretty much on your own until the crack of dawn when the next shift came in.

Check out http://www.rigzone.com

I've also been trying to get into the oil/gas offshore business but haven't had any luck. I've taken all types of courses and earned different certifications in safety. However, without offshore experience, I guess i'm not quaified.

If there is a secret way on how to get your foot in the door with a good company... someone please PM me. The wife is getting impatient and my elbow is killing me from washing and waxing my car... Man I need a Porter Cable.

I work for an Oil Field service company now, soon as I graduate I start training in the company mud school to go off shore. For what I do, they recruit from certain majors, mainly science, though I am not a science major, my work experience in the company gets me my "in," so to speak. From what I have seen, a lot of its working your way up but gaining experience generally leads to a lot better things down the line.

I have some friends that work for SonSub. I don't know much about them, but my buddies didn't have experience and got on.

Might check them out.

I used to work for SonSub, good company. They build and operate ROVs. Everything from surveying, inspection of pipelines to trenching. Very cool stuff those ROVs can do capability wise. They were always on the lookout for good welders, especially someone that can TIG well...

I run a fab shop here in Houston. If you are a welder come in and take a weld test. PM me if you want to know rates.

Why would you want to weld offshore? Welders offshore are pretty much in a dead end job. Most companies don't pay their welders as good as they should because contract welders are so cheap. If you are looking for an offshore job I would rethink comming out as a welder. If you can get hired on with a company start at the bottom (seaman/roustabout) that way you can decide for yourself if welding is the job for you. If it's not you have other opportunities to persue. I started with Transocean 7 years ago at the bottom and have worked my way up to a being a Driller. I only work 6 months a year (14 days on and 14 days off) and am payed very well. If you are really interested go to www.deepwater.com and submit a resume. If you can get on with either Transocean or Global Santa Fe do it. They just merged so if you can get on with either of these you will be with a good company and have some job security. Transocean was the largest offshore drilling company in the world before the merger with Global Santa Fe.

I met a few guys at my last job who do offshore work. About a 50/50 split as far as liking it. But most guys did enjoy the pay and mutiple months off. The last guy I spoke with was working in Alaska, he hated to cold but loved to money. Good luck with your decision!
