Default what size hard drive?

what size hard drive do those with performance computers use? I've got a 100gig in this over the counter one I'm using right now, looking to build something beefy...I've found seagates on a supplier list for the company I work for from 160-750gig. 750 seems pretty overkill, especially with the 320gig external I have for picture and video storage. What do you guys think?

there's a seagate 500gig for a very nice price. Do you run your drive inside the case, or in a 5.25" slot on the front? I've never seen the slot kind of storage before. went ahead and ordered one.

I want to run a dual monitor setup when I get my new rig built. My current computer says it is compatible with 2 monitors, however in the rear there is only 1 serial hookup for a monitor. Most of the video cards I've seen online that support duals only have 1 serial hookup. How do I hookup 2 monitors if there is only 1 serial port?

Currently have 400G and 200G internal drives, one 500G and two 300G external drives.

To answer your question you will need and adapter that plugs into your "dual monitor" video card

the video card is a GeForce 7300GT it has 1 D-Sub and 1 DVI-D connection on it. I think I will just have to buy 1 adapter for the D-Sub side.

Here's the link to the card I have.

the issue is I already have the nvidia 7300GT card. I think it will work fine if I just get the needed adapter. Thanks a ton for the help fellas. I'm going to run the Seagate 500gig internal hard drive on this system. The one I have now is a 100gig and I've never had a single issue with it. The new system will have 4gig of ram also so I should have no issues with all of that in conjunction with the 320external. Just have to get all of the other parts...and the twin monitors...anyone have a hookup on flat panels?

AMD Windsor 3.4 GHZ O/C'd to 4.0
8800 ULTRA
4GBs of RAM 5-5-5-15 timing
4tb of storage
1000W PSU

GET SUM!!! BUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!....that money should've gone into the car....o well! gotta play WoW!!!

Thing with HDD's is the RPM's they run at, the faster drives (10,000 RPM +) wont have huge storage space, but will their seek times are a lot faster, really only used when loading games or loading other things. I would go with a fairly cheap but powerful card, such as an 8600GT or a 7800GT. The dual monitor is no biggy, all cards now-a-days will come with two DVI adapters that will allow you to run multiple monitors. All that is done inside the O.S. lemme know if you need more help, what kind of rig are you building?

I would go with any Fatality or CREATIVE, they both make good stuff

www.newegg.com is a great resource for building a PC, they HUGE selection. i use them on every build
www.xoxide.com is another great site, mainly used for modders ie, LED case fans and flashy things
www.tigerdirect.com, another newegg type site, never used em but i HAVE heard great things,

i'd stick with newegg personally.

hope this helps
-Chris

Also, here is the link to the hard drive the IT guy at work suggested. Its good on the budget and he says its a good one for what I'm going to do. What do you fellas think of it?

as far as sound cards go, seems they run from $10-$100+.... I don't know jack about them so what is there to look for?

the variance in the sound cards is whether or not it comes with a controller, if the car has a controller that mounts in a ROM slot, then its gonna be over 100 bucks. But the cards that dont have front mounted controllers tend to run a lot cheaper. Also, just look for a card that has whatever setup you're running. 4.1,5.1,6.1,7.1 etc.

That looks like a good price for an HDD but, its seagate, seagate is crap. Go with western digital. great hard drives. i've built over 100 rigs and fixed over 1000 through Geek Squad, western Digital seems to last longer and have fewer corruptions per format or install and just simply work better over longer periods of time, which is EXACTLY what you want with technology. WD maybe a little more expensive but o well, it'll last!

also, remember there are differences in SATA and ATA, so make sure that your current motherboard supports SATA if you're going with a newer drive (anything newer than a year old will be SATA unless stated on the box). SATA is faster than ATA btw.

cky, I haven't got a motherboard yet, thats one thing I was still researching. I'm not building a gaming rig really, more for photo and video editing as well as net surfing. I'll have SolidWorks on it also but don't use it that often really. Maybe you could give me a recommendation of a mb and hd to work in conjunction with it. I've heard that with Windows XP 3gig is the max for ram so anything more would be a waste. Thanks for any help man!

also, I really don't know the difference in the SATA or IDE hard drives yet, I understand that the SATA is the newer technology but what else is there that makes it better?

The more cache a hard drive has the better off youll be, but also look at the speed. The more rpms the better.
