It was pretty basic. They give you a booklet with certain products and corresponding codes. They give you outcomes for example If product A is above 100 degrees then it is the mixer that needs to be fixed. If it is below 100 degrees then is it the coupler that needs to be fixed. So each question you are answering what need to be fixed. Very simple but you can mess up by thinking its easy and rushing since you are timed. Hope that helps.

Not really, I would say just be confident when you speak. Try of think of a situation where you helped out in a team environment or when there was a conflict within a team and how did you manage the situation. Also, how does your current job or past experiences help you in this job. On another note, I just did the testing for Valero on Monday and hope to be called back for an interview. Their hiring for 12 postions out of about 300+ people who applied. I got my fingers crossed.

I tested shell motiva and passed but was denied an interview and for valero three rivers last Monday and for Dow in freeport the friday before. Haven't heard back yet from valero but I've got a phone interview for Dow. I don't really know how good of a sign that is though because I think everyone that passed the test there gets a phone interview. Really hoping something comes out of all these tests though. If anyone has anymore advice or info for Dow it would be appreciated.

For you guys that are pounding the pavement...keep trying. You'll get kicked in the face several times but that's the name of the game. Don't get discouraged. I got shot down by several places before I got in at Exxonmobil.

One of my operators sons did the delmar thing and he is doing well working for flint hills. So go for it if you can afford it. All postions at my site are filled right now.

I'm in Exxon right now but as a draftsman, not an operator. I tested with them before but I think it expires in November so I will have to renew it. I've got about 6yrs experience in the plants as a pipefitter and a drafter so I'm hoping that helps my chances. I was told I will be moved forward with Dow for a phone interview but I haven't heard back from them yet.

Well had my interview Tuesday, I think I did well. I'm glad I was picked for an interview out of 300+ people they are interviewing about 70 people. Out of those 70 people they are hiring 12 operators. I think this is the best chance I got. I just got to keep praying. If I don't get this job I'm definately going to Del Mar for the degree program.

I have yet to find someone post that they hate their job. I think everyone loves their job that's why it's so hard to get into a postion. These people are keeping their jobs for 25+ years. I mean really you don't need advancement when your making 60-100k depending on how much overtime you get. The starting base pay is good enough for most people I would think. I'm sure the job does get boring and times but the pay, benefits, and amount of time off (your work about half the month) outweigh the boredness. This all from what I have read on forums and a couple of people who are currently operators.

Aggie...you are partially wrong. There are boring times, but it's not a bad boring. I'd rather be bored in a refinery as opposed to busy fighting a unit upset. Also, depending on the facility, there are plenty of
advancement opportunities. In a very small facility, sure, the ladder is short.
For the amount of work that we do and the amount of off time we have, operators are generally pretty happy.
I know plenty of people with advanced degrees who don't come close to making what we make.

Aggie.... I have two family members with chem engineering degrees who are both operators and they have been higher up and came back down to be operators because they a. make more money and b. enjoy the operations life above the engineers life
