There are several services that we could want out there, but you have to think of things from a business perspective too. If these customers are trying to "save money" by doing their own labor, that means you need to charge less per hour than the typical shop rate. Probably less than half. Normal rates are around $60/hr, so lets say you only charge $25/hr for your bays. Would that be enough to pay the bills at the end of the month?

I've seen 10-bay auto shops without any equipment in this area, renting out for around $5-6K per month. That doesn't include purchasing equipment etc.. How many $25/hr customers will it take to recover the huge initial investment? Figure each lift is $2500 each just to start.

Take this one step futher, what if you bought a self storage unit with lets say 200 bays that would hold a car and built a 6 bay shop........... supply air to the 200 storage units and rent bays out for 20 or 25 bucks an hour or so much for an 8 hour day and 100 a month for the storage bays ..... would anyone here do that.

1) People would take their sweet as time.
2) People would steal or **** **** up.
3) (Dumb-***) People will get hurt.
4) Like tony said, probably going to be VERY hard to make a profit.

I think the liability part alone would keep a business like this from going up. It would be cool though!

my college had a student auto shop. you'd pay an hourly rate to use a bay and the tools. i dont remember the rate, but it was very cheap. if you wanted to use the lift, you paid more.

when i needed to do an oil change, i usually just did this:

Thanks for all your input everyone.

Nine Ball, I thought about that after I made the post. It would be very hard to make some kinda of profit without using the shop for somethine else. There would have to a lot of work and planning to go into something like this. Probably wouldnt be worth the effort.

I could only see this working if someone owned a lot of land, had a building just sitting there, and could install lifts in it. No lease or rent costs, so it would be nearly 100% profit other than the electricity bill.
