Question on titles?
I just bought my new car on here and I'm 19 years old. I know I can register a title under my name but do they charge like taxes or a percentage of what the total sale costed to register it under my name? Thanks
You need to go TDT's web site and down load form VTR-130-U, have the previous owner sign the signature line of line 22, you can fill out the rest of the form. Have the owner sign the front and back signature lines of the title. Fill out the title and form, and from there go to your county tax assessor collector's office to re-title, register, and pay your taxes on the car. The fees are made up of a 28 or 33 dollar title fee, 6.25% of sale price in taxes, and then 50 to 60 dollars for the registration. I highly recommend listing the sale price truthfully, because getting caught lying is a felony. Plus, many Texas counties have a presumptive value rule for vehicles less than 25 years old, which means that they have a set fair market value for the vehicle you bought, which ever is the higher number, sales price or presumptive value, that is the number you pay the sales tax on, even if you only paid $1 for that sweet red bird. I will pm you my attorney's fee for the legal advice, J/K.

True, you can do that, but remember that if they check and your story does not match the seller's, its not a piddly misdemeanor, its a felony. You'd be better off lying about the price than claiming its a gift if you do not know the seller personally, that is dumb. You can find the presumptive value figure online through your tax assessor collector's web site, but remember not all counties have that though.
We just did ours last month. The value they had set was higher then what I reported so they used the set value at $9,640.00. They told me that the value changes weekly up and down. 02 WS6 with 100,000 miles cost me $620.49 for the title transfer only
. The tags were still current.
. The tags were still current. i usually just say the car was $1000 or maybe $2000 if its a nice car. the clerk cant legally question you on the price you tell them. they dont know if it was a good deal from family or friend or auction or what.
The state of Texas has changed the law on that. You can no longer get away with saying I only paid $1,000 for a car valued at 15k. It does not even matter what the seller says or signs. When I transferred mine last month. I put purchase price at $5k and the clerk said the value of the car was $9,640.00 and that is what I would have to pay taxes on. It is no longer a clerks decision. They enter all of you're vehicle info and it tells them what you are going to pay. If you paid more than what the value says of course you will pay more tax.

Not all counties have presumptive value, if they dont, you could get away with a low ball sales price.
The VTR-130-U I posted in the above link is the transfer form/bill of sale all in one, click and print.
