Default Bar recommendations in Houston...

Hey gang, just wanting to get some tips on good bars in Midtown. I have not been and I'm thinking my buddies and I are going to head out there this weekend. Usually we just stay around home so we don't have to drive far but I need to open my social horizons a little bit!

I like to listen live rock cover bands and dance a little bit to some of the hit dance songs.... Any ideas??

I hope you like $7 beers, and "lounge" atmospheres and music. Thanks, but no thanks. Id much rather be at a sports bar or pool hall with cheap drinks, hot girls, and pool tables. Just my .02

Pub Fiction is the most popular in midtown. Get there before 9:30 to avoid any lines
Shot Bar is newer and smaller, but equally busy. Saw plenty of talent there last Fri.

I pretty much avoid cheap drink night at any weekend bar, for the opposite reasons Charlie stated. I don't like hanging out with cheap bastards and trash on the weekend. Those are weekday only

I avoid certain 'atmospheres' also, but $7 beer is just wrong. That is un-american. Plain and simple.

The only place I've seen $7 beer is at strip clubs. My beer was $3 in Midtown on Friday.

Ever heard of a flask of Crown? Even cheap bastards can go act like ballers sometimes

True. Although I haven't been to every single club/bar in Midtown, majority of them play hip hop/dance/rap/etc.

I'd like to know where the $3 beer is on friday night in midtown? Different story if we are talking happy hour or something.

There are a few places I like going in Midtown;

Tipsy Clover-Pretty laid back crowd, good music and drinks aren't THAT expensive

Howl at the moon- Same reasons as above and the piano guys are pretty damn funny

Little Woodrows/Front porch pub - These are strictly bars and just real chill, probably find the cheapest drinks here.

If you don't want to deal with cocky door guys, dress codes that change every minute, yuppy **** you should steer clear of places like pub fiction, red door etc.

Here is a quick example of why I don't like pub fiction, last time me and a few buddies were in the area having a good time and we decided to head over to pub because like Tony said there are always hot girls there, it's the douchbags that make the place shitty. Now granted we aren't really dressed for the night time pub fiction atmosphere, my 3 buddies are wearing polo type shirts and shorts w/ sandals, I'm dressed the same except I have on a pair of d/c shoes. So the guy lets my buddies in but I can't get in cause of my skate shoes. I asked him what the **** the difference was, he said "it's summer time and sandals are allowed". So go to pub fiction if you want to deal with that...lol.

Same here, I havent been to every single one, but all the ones I know play what you said. The only place I know that does, plays 80's music is Sammys on Thursday night.

Beer is $3 at almost all the places you listed at on weekends. $3 is the norm for everywhere. Maybe they saw you coming at the door and signaled the bartender to charge you more. Happy hour is $1 or $1.50.

I know for a fact beer isn't $3 @ pub fiction or tipsy clover on the weekend. I know little woodrows has big beer night on saturday so it probably is around $3 or a little more. American beer was $5 last time I was at pub fiction, maybe that changed but I doubt it. I think it's $4.50 or something like that at tipsy clover.

And about $3 being the norm, not in midtown it's not. Maybe you haven't been to any of the nicer/trendier places there to know that.

Pub Fiction is $2 beers from 4 to 9 everyday I believe(at least m-f). We were at pub and then shot bar on friday night, and I think beers were only 3 or 4 bucks at shot bar too.

I was gonna say I know pub fiction has a pretty good happy hour which makes it a good place to catch football once the season rolls around. Haven't tried shot bar yet, what kind of atmosphere is it and where is it?

Anybody been to Zeppelin in midtown, out of the way a bit but the girls there are ridiculous if you can get past the door guys.

Now you know the reason some bars charge more for drinks and cover. To keep guys like your kung-fu buddies in sandals from coming in

Shot bar was pretty cool. It is over kinda behind specs, the opposite way from pub fiction. It is in what I think is an old house, so it was cramped and packed(read: Hot). More of a club/bar then a relaxing bar though.
