Default M6 to A4

Sup Guys,
Alright I have read all the treads on here about swapping a M6 to A4. They are all confusing in my point of view. So can someone please post on here on how to do this please. Pics would be most welcome. Thanks Mike

dude, dont do this, been there done that, first of all you need to swap computers so you have to find someone that wants to switch with you that has the same exact year you have or your computer wont work properly, then you have to get it burned then tuned by a reputable shop, not to mention the pedals are a bitch to take out and re-install in a diferent car also all the wiring for the auto tranny!!! you will need to change alot of other stuff than just the tranny, you need a cross member, diferent driveshaft, tons of stuff..... it can be done but to have it done correctly look to spend a minimum of $1500 bucks and wait 2 weeks or so on a reputable shop, its not just a come on over this weekend we can have a few beers and do this in my garage type of job this is a "project"....... considering all the problems you will run into and the parts you will need will most likely be backordered with a 4 week wait til the part ships from gm, then your looking for this and that cuz you dont wanna wait on backordered parts, then you might wanna swap rearends so you can have correct gearing for the auto unless the person you find has stock gearing and you do as well..... its alot easier to find someone w/ an auto car that buys your car and you buy theirs,..... i know thats crazy sounding but trust me its not easy at all, find someone with an auto of same value as your car that wants to buy yours and you buy theirs, thats the best way lol there are alot of auto guys that want the m6 so dont get screwed over by some side joe saying they can do it in their garage.... it will work for them cuz the m6 is so simple but the wiring on an auto and computer problems and tuning problems you will run into isnt worth it so if you do the swap do it at a reputable shop..... trust me i learned this they hard way 3yrs ago

That's some of the best advice I've read here in a long time.

In fact it is a very large undertaking. We do these often. But, I will not take the job unless it is done correctly, no corners cut. There is only one way to do this job. And that takes time.

We do conversions here at ACE. They are not easy, not at all. It takes gobs of planning on the front end. I will not even take the car in until all of the parts have been acquired. No two are ever the same because one guy will want an axle or gear swap, another will want an aftermarket shifter, another will want full bolt on suspension... but on average they all take 3-4 working days.

Step 1: Remove *********.
Step 2: Turn in your man-card, you do not need it for automatics.

So ball park, what does it cost. I have a built 4l60e, my car has 13k miles on it, it's a 2002, was built about at 8k miles If memory serves me. It has a Vig 3200 converter. I may be interested in doing a swap if I can find a M6 setup in good condition. Otherwise I may just buy the parts & have my A4 setup in case I ever want to go back.

I would think with two cars side by side, there wouldn't be so many parts to buy if you are just doing a even swap. Again, I could be wrong, but it's probably based on the condition of the car & what really needs to be replaced instead of swapped.

The base labor cost for each car, assuming all things are equal and no other components are involved --- a straight up swap --- is $600.00. But, I've never seen that happen. There is always an aftermarket shifter, suspension, or other mod that drives the cost up from there.

Remember, no two are ever the same... hasn't happened in my shop anyways. Each car, each job is quoted on it's own merit based on the requirements of the owner.

Not bad, I'd pay that for sure if I found the right M6 donor. Although I've heard going from A4 >> to M6 is easier. Again, I haven't done it, you have, lol. I guess there are trade offs, putting the pedals probably sucks, and having to run cooling lines for A4 probably suck equally as much, lol. I will definitely keep you in mind when I find the right donor.

People used to ship cars from across the state to MTI, there's some great shops here in Texas that do great work....and yea, I actually like Dallas, I could cruise up there to drop my car off & probably get a buddy pass to fly back on. And it's moD, not moB. LOL like modding a car, that's how I came up with it...and a play on that old TV show.

I think you are confused, I don't work at a shop, so I'm not sure who's telling you I do good work. I'm a good wrench, I've done pretty much everything but tune my car, build my tranny and the gear install. I used to be a mechanic but mostly for equipment & mostly trucks....

First of all LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now yea i know it will not just be come over and swap real quick. My brother was thinking of swapping me so i already have all the parts at my house. I just wanted to know if it is going to more fun when i drive or get freaking boring putting it in D? Yes i agree the pedals are going to be a bitch but we have to live and learn.

Mostly depends on the type of driving you want to do. If you want to drag race/bracket race, A4 makes for some good 60' times & consistent ET's. If you sit in a lot of stop & go traffic, A4 is also nice. A4 will get less MPG though. Also, if you don't want to buy a 12 bolt, an A4 is the way to go if you plan on making some decent power....they both have their advantages & disadvantages. If you brother has an A4, drive his for a bit to see how you like it.

I did my swap M6 to A4 and it was a very painless swap. All you need to do is make sure that whoever you are trading with gives you all the parts. It would be easier to do if the vehicles were sided by side.

I swapped with a guy from Louisiana and I was in Georgia. We met halfway in Alabama. All I was missing was a tranny mount bushing. It was an easy swap, just had to plug the hole for the shifter and the hole for the clutch master.

Let me know if you need any help/questions.
