It really depends on how much you are using if for, if it's going to be used on a daily basis definately go with the IR, i have the 2135TI and it is an awesome gun, comfortable, fairly light, and breaks just about everything loose, the only gun i think is better is the newest Snap-On, however it is loud!! and damn heavy, however for just hobby use like you say, a good craftsman gun will work, i would also look to see if you could find a cornwell gun, or an aircat, which is going to be a little bit more than a craftsman but a lot better imo.

 

I paid 189 for my IR231 9years ago...off a matco tool truck,i beat the **** out of it for 5 yrs straight changing tires tra=ranny's and i have no clue how many engines it has torn down....i had it rebuilt once back in 04....I use it at home now to work on things with...its still has enough grunt to break loose the dampner bolt on an ls engine....

 

back when i was working i trashed about 4 northern guns....for a hobbiest they would be ok but if its used on a daily basis go IR....

some may laugh idk but my bro in law has one of the HD cambell hausfield wal-mart guns...its 10+ years old and still a strong gun its heavy as hell but cheap and pretty strong....

 

When I first started wrenching I bought a craftsman impact. At least once a week I would come across a lug nut that it wouldn't take off. I got sick of borrowing someone elses gun just to take tires off and I bought an IR thunder gun. It is a loud son of a bitch. Some of the guys at work put on earmuffs when I use it just to kid me a little.

 

Air cat makes some really nice guns and they make the power to do anything and they are very light weight and the price is right

 

I've had great luck with my old IR.
