Default lifter rods

I know the correct size is 5/16 of an inch, but would a 1/4 rod work? I work at a fab shop and thats the only size close to what its suppose to be.

rod you use to keep the lifters up in the cups, while not pulling the heads off.

Whenever you rotate the cam it pushes the lifters up into the trays and should stay most of the time. How are the dowels holding the lifters in place? Elaborate on this. I haven't got to do a cam only swap while in the car yet. Pics would be great.

the rods slide under a lip on the lifter or something like that. Usually youll get a 9/10 agreeance that lifter cups suck and shouldnt be trusted
