Our axle =) Its a Volvo rear axle from a buss. It got air brakes and we can easily hook an eddy brake to it since the volvo buss got one. We havnt bought that yet but if the rig turns out useable we`ll buy one!

Its been a weekend with cutting, grinding, lifting, swearing, cutting, grinding, and soo on!
The project started with big bummer on friday afternoon/night. When we were at the truck yard we talked to the owner to get some idees and tips of how things could be made and how the rear axle worked with brakes etc.
We also mentioned that we had to lock the differential to have the same amount of braking effect on L/h-side and R/H-side so we dont break the LSD / welded diff on our cars.
F&%&¤ that! thank you for not telling us mr.ownertruckyardman
(read on)... hehe
We finally got the rear axle into our shop. Rigged the axle on a pair of jacks and had a discussion of how to lock the diff. We saw a hose sticking out of the diff. housing but didnt think anymore about it. Only way to lock it was at that moment to weld it. We started cutting holes in the back of the housing so we could weld through them. unfortunate the diff was sealed so we couldnt find the gears to weld. That ment we had to tear it appart! So we did! It was hell of a job and took 3-4 hours with rusted bolts etc![Barf](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_barf.gif)
![](http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a10/sindregutt/IMG_0118.jpg)
btw, the rear weights 1800lbs in total.. It is heavy!!
Diff out! yeah! still sealed and pain to get appart. Looking closer we found out what the small airhose on the diff housing! Yeah, OFFCOURSE!! Its air controlled lock up! haha again mr.truckyardman.. THANK YOU.. or not!.. We went home dirty and tired..
Saturday! new day, new energi, trying to forget friday!
We dug out a old truck frame from the snow and hacked it in four pieces. The four pieces made the frame to hold the rear axle and the ramps. Just what we needed!

A few people came to see the progress and discussed wether the truck brakes was enaugh or not. Some also ment that we didnt need so much brake power to hold a 350kw LS1 on full power. You can turn this around, upside down as much as you want but if you HAVE 350kw you need to get rid of it. So using a 30kw generator wont hold a 350kw. I feel many people doesnt understand this but this is the first rule of physics.
We are using the truck brakes in our first attempt as we wanna see how good it works but if we need more brake power the Edddy Current brake is supposed to hold 200hp, AND it works with the RPM. As the RPM (and hopefully power of the car) rises the ED-brake brakes more. PERFECT!
I think we will buy one of those brakes, maybe two.
Sunday!
Finnished the rig with ramps. It is quite cold so we cant make a permanent mount outside so as for now its just sitting on snow/grawle. This will be sorted as the snow is melting.

Long thread, hopefully somewhat entertaining![Grin](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_grin.gif)
Looking forward to test it!
Safety platforms etc will be added =)

Yea we`re planning to mount a Eddy current brake (electromagnetic brake) on the input shaft. Im not sure what you mean with the torque beeing multiplied but as for the gearing it doesnt really matter as long as the brakes operate in the speed they are design to do they can just hold "soo much" power (watts (Horsepower).. With gearing the torque goes fex up and then the rpms down. The work beeing done is the same =)

=D Testing it this weekend if the snow doesnt stop us!! Not sure if we are able to get the wheels dry enaugh hehe!
The axle is 1000 usd and the extra electro brake is another 1000 usd, but we live in norway so its not compareable to USA prices :/
