jacks- there's a few really nice ones out there which cost $$$, the rest are very similar. you can have cheap or good, not both
as far as the jack stands go, I like the harbor freight ones... they're at least as good as any of the others I've used. The 3 ton ones are fine for normal stuff like rotating tires and stuff, but if you have to get under the car I prefer the 6 ton ones, to get some extra room without resorting to stacking boards or something under the smaller jackstands.

As long as you get the replacement plan when you buy something at HF then you will be taken care of, regardless of how bad the product is beaten/broken. They don't care. You get another one on the spot. If the cylinder leaks or gets hard to turn then just take it back. As long as you spent the $ on a replacement plan you'll walk out with a new one, and that goes for any of their stuff.

My favorite jack stands are made by Alltrade, it's their 3 ton 'All in One' jack stand with built-in bottle jack. A street rod builder friend of mine turned me on to them about a year ago. I got mine at Pep Boys, but you can find them online. I paid about $39 each last year.

I have a Craftsman 3 ton jack, and two sets of jack stands. I don't see how you can screw up jack stands, so I'd look for the cheapest ones of those.
As for the jack, it works good for the price I paid. It's probably nowhere near the best, but if you're on a budget I think it's just fine.

Update fellers:
After much fence sitting and internet forum searching, I bit the bullet and got the AFF 200SS at Mile-X Equipment for $290.00 + shipping.
VeryVERY nice, I'm glad I got it. I highly reccomend it, it's worth the few more bucks over the others.
Too bad it can't be had in blue....
