Default aluminum heads + chain = ?

so this weekend i plan on pulling my engine... my question is, when i lift the engine out of the k-member, will it screw up my heads if i go old school and bolt chains to the heads, or do i have to buy a lift plate?

sweet, thanks. i was thinking about it and people used to lift old big blocks the same way. if it damaged those then they would have stopped a long time ago.

old big blocks had iron heads

anyway, even with an aluminum head motor it should be fine , but i would prefer to lift from the block, and lift from the heads as a last resort

do not buy a plate. just make your own. take off the valley cover and make a steel copy of it with a nice hook

you will be fine, just make sure that you use one of the bolt holes on the lower part of the head, dont use the one closest to the exhaust ports. i learned the hard way and broke one.

also, when you put the bolts in, bottom them out in the hole, then back them off a turn or two, you want to make sure its pulling up on the hole itself and not pushing into the bottom of the hole, thats how you get cracks inside you cant see untill its too late.

I hooked my chain on the unused bolt holes in the heads. I hooked the front of one head and the rear of the other head and the engine balanced perfect like this. No tranny of course.
