Default Quick clarification on Home Depot lifter rod tool

1st time LS1 cam-swapper here with a quick question on the wooden dowel rod tool.

I have a 48" wooden dowel rod, cut in half. Does either side need modified at all? I read a few times about people filing one side flat, or tapering the one end, etc., but then other don't mention it?

Before I spun the cam, I gently pushed the rods in and they went in the whole way without hitting anything. Is this to be expected, or are they not sitting in there right?

I just want to verify this 100% before I yank the cam as I don't want any dropped lifters

Thanks!
