I bought the Mitchell study guides back in 1996 and I thought that they were usefull.. At the time I took 8 or 9 tests and passed them all. The Mitchell books helped. Especially for auto trans and AC. I recall that the AC test had questions specific to Chrystler products (sight glass location) and others. Things like that made the book usefull.
The auto trans book was good too because it helps you think of more possibilities of variouse trans problems... maybe more then you have personally seen first hand.
The tests, IMO, are just that.. a test. Study and you will pass.. Doesn't mean you can fix a car.. Nice to have though so good luck..

what do you thinkof working on audis? I start next week as a audi/porsche tech.
The tests arent too bad, the one that almost got me was heating and ac and brakes was kind of close. Just read the books and get the terms down. Remember the magic words "could" this cause the problem, no mater how unlikely "could". As long as you know the basics and read the books you wont have any problems.

The best ASE test prep book i've used is one put out by Delmar publishing written by Don Knowles it contains all 8 ASE tests and L1 in one book for $65. Not only does it contain Questions /answers and the brief reason for the answer but it also has paragraph within a group of questions explaining the functioning of flow restictors in refigerant systems for example.
ASE tests lately are going heavily towards electrical diagnosis questions, on all tests. HVAC and brakes I just took contained 1/3 electrical questions.

No kidding auto trans had more to do with tps's and voltage refrence then trans hydrolics. And the hvac had more electrical then the electrical test.
