Have you seen one of these tools before or do you know anyone that has one?

Of the actual JPR tool? Dunno, never held one in my hands. I just went to Home Depot and picked up 5/16" steel rod and used that I did polish it up with some emery cloth first, to make sure they slid in nice and smooth.

I think that the tool is actually a cylindrical rod that is ground flat on two sides. If you look at the end view, it looks like a slice of pie as I recall (I saw one about four months ago). The pointed edge is supposed to slide in the notched out area of the lifters. I'd like to learn more too.

I'm not positive why the JPR tools is flat on the one edge. Maybe to make installation a touch easier? The regular ol' 5/16" rod fits perfectly, and its phyically impossible to drop a lifter with them slid in the block. Just head to Home Depot and be done with it... Mucho cheaper too

HAHA. I called TR and asked if I could just use a wooden dowl. He said... "If you haven't heard about it yet, I wouldn't think it would work." Looks like I've heard about it now!

(BTW: I think TR is a great company so I wouldn't want this to be taken as a derragtory remark on their behalf.)

I tried using 5/16 mild steel rods from home depot. it didnt work. the passenger side one wouldnt get past the first lifter and the drivers side rod didnt seem to do anything to hold the lifters up. i assumed with the rods in place that the lifters wouldn't fall back down. to check this i simply pushed on them after spinning the cam and installing the rod. well they went right back to the cam. so how exactly are the rods supposed to work and how do i get one to fit the passenger side. i dont like playign russian roullet. thanks

I used the 5/16 rod and it worked perfectly. I ground the end down to a blunt point, polished them both up pretty good and they both fit perfectly. The driver side was a litle tight but I just spun the cam and it slide right in. I made mine about 6 in longer than the cam and then bent it 90 deg with about 3 in for a handle.

the 5/16" works perfectly. just spin the cam some more if it doesnt slide in...keep spinning the cam as you push it in. and dont bother polishing it with the emery cloth, its small enough to slide in with almost no resistance.

try pulling up the lifter with a magnetic pen and see if you can get the rod through

On a couple motors, I encountered some resistance on one side. The first time, it was a pretty low mile so I played roulette on one side, used the rod on the other. The second time, I shaved down the rod a few more thousandths and now it fits perfectly.. Still locks the lifters on my "test" motor so its all good.

I used 5/16" alum. rod and on mine, the drivers side rod slid right in and was just slightly loose. But on the pass. side, I had to grind about 1/32" off along the length of the rod to get it to go in. Then I twisted it slightly and it tightened up against the lifters.
