Question MIG welding using co2 ?.

I hear it works well with only slight splatter. Plus a new aluminum cylinder is only $100. Refills are extremely cheap and since it's a liquid that expands as it is dispensed, you can get the same amount of weld time from a 27 inch tall bottle as a 5 foot tall 75/25 bottle.

Thoughts?

It's what I run. The spatter is worse. It welds a little bit hotter, so if you're running a small machine near the limit of its capabilities using co2 will help you get better penetration.

I don't have tons of experience with flux core. It's a manageable amount with co2, but more than you get with 75/25.

I use 75% argon - 25% co2. I get very little splatter, not even a 1/8 of the splatter you get from flux core.

I have mig welded with tri mix. It runs a lot hotter weld than what you get with 75/25. Never tried strait argon.

I would think that you might get a nice weld with straight argon. I'll have to try that sometime. Then again, I've had bad ideas before...............**** man, I'm married.

I feel that pain, have the same problem. Have a kid and then you'll really have issues lol.

My car would have been done 2 years ago if it weren't for that. Love them both to death.... But it killed my car progress, just now finally getting going to finish it

Ive wondered about this as well. I have a miller multimatic that can mig, tig, or stick weld, but in the 6 months ive had it all I've done is tig with it since I have a mig already set up at work. If i could mig with straight argon with good results it would keep me from buying or renting a 2nd bottle for co2.

just did some research, straight argon for mig welding makes for poor penetration.

Ha, my son just turned 1 a couple months ago. Both of us work and the 750/month in day care is pretty much pissing me the **** off. But, like you said, love them to death.

To the guy a couple up, thanks for looking into that. Sounds like it wasn't a good idea.

Same boat as you guys, Blew my clutch 3 months ago and the car gets to sit in the back of the garage waiting on saving program. Before the 2 kids I would have pulled the trans and bought a new clutch the same day I destroyed the old one. Sucks to have to be a responsible adult/parent sometimes lol.

Yup. It's the only reason my pos is still not done. But it's getting close now, really not a lot left to do. Little fab work, headers and exhaust, driveshaft, racepak system, wire and plumb fuel system and it's done. Still a lot of $$ just because of what it is, but little by little it's getting chipped away at.

I have but only when I run out of C25 and I have to hook up the MIG line to the TIG tank. Happens sometimes.

I use the MIG for sheet steel, nothing very thick, about the equivalent of exhaust tubing work. It welds fine on this stuff, never done pure Argon with anything much thicker than about 1/8".
