Default inside mic? or telescoping gauge set

I'm getting prepared to measure for bearing clearances and I was just wondering what the preferred tools are for this. In addition to a standard outside micrometer, is it more common to use the telescoping gauge set or is an inside micrometer preferred?

I'm on amazon and the price difference isn't enough to steer me in either direction.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Dial bore gauge would be my preferred method, followed by the telescoping gauges. You will need an outside mic to use either. The downfall to an inside mic is that it's hard to get it centered to get a good measurement. I tried measuring cylinder bores with mine and it was a PITA.

Its one of those things that is done by feel.........like from doing it over and over again as a daily job. When using a bore gauge it helps to wave it back and forth and watch the dial sweep to its tightest point.

Dial bore gauge is pretty much the industry standard for checking clearances.

Another vote for a dial bore gauge. I used to use telescoping gauges, but it's very hard to get consistent readings.

Sunnen makes some good **** as a large part of their product line is honing inside holes.

Other than that, Starrett or nothing else.

I have the same kit. I have those stupid telescoping things as well and I have yet to use them. The inside mic is the only way to go if you want to be accurate.

I find it hard to get a repeatable reading trying to measure a cylinder bore with my inside mic. It's also damn near impossible to measure the bottom of a cylinder with it. The dial bore gauge combined with a good outside mic is the way to go IMHO.
