How to keep tools from rusting?
I just bought a cheap set of deep impact sockets from harbor freight and would like to keep them from rustting. I know that I can keep them oiled down but that tends to get messy. I would like to protect them with something but do not know any other way. Maybe a clear coat spay paint but don't believe that it will hold up too well. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Move to Nevada; it has not rained there for several years.
I bought the same ones from HF a few months back. No rust yet.
I beleive the finish on these pups is gun blue. Just like all your favorite hunting rifles, shot guns, and personal protection hand guns, a light coat of oil will keep them rust-free and ready to blast through even the toughest of jobs.

The black oxide coating should not rust (red oxide)
unless you leave them wet. I have sets of cheapo
impact sockets that have sat in unconditioned Florida
garages for 15+ years and don't show any rust (though
leaving them with whatever grease happens to land
on them, probably hasn't hurt).
If you just wipe them with an oily rag that would be
enough, especially if they stay in a (dry) toolbox.
Now, I have had other stuff in my "road kit" toolboxes
get some rain in the box, and rust like mad. But the
road kits get my 3rd-4th best of everything and oh,
well.
