Default Help me choose a first welder

Hi All,

I am about to purchase a new welder for my garage. I want to be able to weld mainly mild steel and aluminum. I will be using this welder for everything from small brackets, lawn equiptment to subframe work etc. I am leaning towards a MM210 MIG welder but I am still undecided. This will be a first welder and I have really never welded before (well besides messing around with a friend's welder). If I get a MM210 now I will upgrade to a TIG later next year. However, I am still pondering wether I should get the MIG welder first or go with a TIG. I have about 5 years expience with soldering and brazing small and big 5" joints so I do have a steady hand but I know that these processes are totally different than welding. I am leaning more towards a MIG because of the speed and the faster learning curve but I wanted to get some opnions from experienced welders. Any opinions/comments will be appreciated.

Thanks,

I have a Lincoln 200 amp MIG that works VERY well, I also have a Lincoln 175 TIG. They each have their better points but I think I use the MIG more than anything. The MIG doesn't work that well on anything but mild steel, if you need to do stainless and aluminum better look at TIG units I think. I'm just a hot rodder (about 30 years worth).....not a pro welder but that's my two cents worth. I do all of my own fabrication.

Your first welder should be your last; so pick the best you can afford.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I should have clarified that I will be eventually buying both a MIG welder and a TIG but which one should I get first?

I'd buy the MIG first so you can weld right away, TIG requires more experience and practice..... you need to learn "while you weld".

Thanks for the reply Oscar. I was thinking the same thing too. How about my choice for the MIG? How is a Miller 210 for a MIg welder?

I would get a mig welder. You can weld steel and aluminum with MIG. You have to change out the wire with the flexcore on it to weld aluminum and it doesnt require Gas.

I have a Miller 210 and absolutely love it! It welds steel, stainless, and aluminum, and holds two different shielding gas bottles. It's a great MIG, but be sure to get the optional spool gun if you want to weld aluminum.

How hard is it to get the hang of welding?? Im going to buy a welder in the next few months, probably MIG based on what you guys have said. Where would I look to find out about classes?? I mainly need to do brackets, and intake tubing, etc.

Lots of practice on scrap stuff until you get good at it .. Tig is a bit harder but you could prob get one of those how to books and practice or take a welding class somwhere.
