3/4 ton '01 Suburban, 6.0L, 4L80E, 4.10 gears (14 mpg in daily driving with no towing). Does all of my towing chores (as well as hauling plywood & dry wall or 8 people which is not uncommon, etc...). I also tow a 10,000 lb boat. You can hardly even tell when it's only a car tagging along.

The tow rig I usually borrow from my dad:
http://www.naabsales.com/51ford/PICT1137.JPG
1989 Chevy V3500 Crewcab 4x4 - 350, TH400, NP208, Warn locking hubs
Shown pulling our friends bobcat trailer with a '51 Ford F-6 dually dumptruck on top

I just bought a 24' class IV bumper hitch car trailer that needs axles, which I'm going to fix up and use for my towing needs. Teh blue truck in the picture above blew a head gasket so my truck ('72 Cheyenne/20) is going to get some towing duty in this summer and surely more power as well. I also bought a '58 Spartan 100 that I'll probably use some for towing as well.

Wow - lots of nice rigs you guys have

After doing some calculations, it doesn't make sense for me to buy an expensive truck/trailer/license/insurence/gas...etc,etc. If I'm stranded at the track it might cost $100 for a tow back to my house. But I'd still be way ahead unless I was getting towed every time I went.

I am planning on hauling a little tire/tool trailer behind my Camaro to the track for now - all I can afford at this point

We have towed quite a lot with my truck and my dad's 2000 Sierra ECSB with a 5.3L

The new tow vehicle will be:
1999 Chevrolet Crew cab short bed.
350
4L80E
9.5"SF
4.10 gears

Depending on how far we have to go, we use a variety of rigs.

For local races, we have a 1994 Chevy "Dooley" with a 454 in it and a 32 Foot enclosed Tag trailer.

For a little longer haul, we have a Freightliner FL60 4-Door and a 48 Foot enclosed trailer.

For those times when necessary to make an impression, we have a 2000 Peterbilt 18 Wheeler with a 53 foot monster trailer.

I get to drive the first 2, no luck getting behind the wheel of the 18 Wheeler yet, maybe one day...

I was just getting ready to ask this question! Once the Sierra is paid for (8-10 months!) I'll be looking for a tow vehicle to yank it to shows/races with. It's about 4200lbs or so.

Would I need at least a 3/4-ton platform, or could I get by with another 1500? What about Yukons/Tahoes?

Do you want an inclosed trailor ? My truck barely fits in my 26 footer and I have to remove the mirrors.

We tried pulling the trailor with my dad's Tahoe and it was not fun.

I haven't really looked that far ahead, but maybe. Would I be best getting a 2500 or 2500HD? I'll still have the Saturn to drive as a daily, so gas mileage isn't a HUGE concern, but the cheaper the better. Maybe an 02 HD?

2004.5 3500 RAM Diesel
- TTP Custom Exhaust
- aFe Air Intake
- TST Box
- 3.73 Gears
- 6 Speed

In the gas all the time I get 18mpg unloaded, would get between 22-24mpg with the box turned down but that is no fun...

I get about 14-16mpg with the trailer.

Just try to get something with a longer wheelbase my 26 footer was hauled two hours empty with a tahoe and my dad says it wasn't fun. If you can get a duramax they get pretty good gas mileage and pull really damn good.

however, with the new DOD v8's id rather have a new TB with the DOD 5.3 ls2.
Good to know that I can pull mine with my Envoy. And I have 4.10's
