my best bet is to get the econotig and just add a 230 outlet in the garage

if your're even thinking about welding aluminum you need a AC machine with 200 AMPs minimum. Al is a great heat sink which requires a lot more heat to weld. A Miller syncrowave 250dx is a great machine to start with

Not at all. you need to look at what you will be welding though.

If you plan on repairing cylinder heads then yes.

fab work, and general automotive repair, no.
