Default What does wd-40 stand for

So does the "WD-40" in wd-40 actually stand for something or is it just some goofy name someone thought of? I must be bored.

Beat me to it.

Hm, never thought it stood for something. 40 tries isn't too bad.

The smell is actually an added ingrediant. Invented to keep moisture off missle components. I love the stuff.

it's mostly kerosene and a light machine oil with a scent added to it so you don't know that that's all it is...

From an article in Forbes long ago, it was invented in WWII and the current company started out simply selling surplus army stock. At one point though they realized that they had no idea how to make the stuff and nearly went out of business. They reverse engineered their own product and only then were they able to stay in business.

Found this on howstuffworks.com

WD-40 literally stands for Water Displacement, 40th attempt. That's the name straight out of the lab book used by the chemist who developed WD-40 back in 1953. The chemist, Norm Larsen, was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion -- a task which is done by displacing water. Norm's persistence paid off when he perfected the formula on his 40th try.

thats so funny. More useless info for me to tell people when im bored at work, lol
