Default Welding Extension Cord

I am looking for a 50ft extension cord to work with my Lincoln 175HD. Any idea where I can get one of these...it will need to have the NEMA 6-50 male/female plugs on the ends.

Thanks

Get ready for some sticker shock.

Stuff's expensive.

I looked at making my own from parts from http://www.mcmaster-carr.com - ouch.

A google search on welder extension cord reveals a few

I need one for my Lincoln AC arc welder (but only about 25 feet). May just do some dumpster diving here at work (power company) for some big wire.

So what size cable should I use for this if I need 50ft.? I wired up a 50A breaker...so I am assuming that I should use cable that is good for 50A over that distance? Any advice would be a big help, I am not a big electrical guy (if you can't tell).

I made my own, ordered the stuff through work. It cost me about $50 to make a 25 foot 8 gauge extension cord.

I found a set of military slave (jumper) cables at a Army/Navy surplus store. I dont know if these were used for jump starting tanks, of for starting aircraft. but they were 50 feet long exactly. They were reasonable too, IIRC they were either $20 or $25.

I don't know what gage wire it is, but it is about as big around as my little finger, say just under 1/2 inch. The connector on one end was fried, but I didn't want it for the connectors anyway. I put a male 240/50amp oven plug on one end and on the other end I made a small box to hold one 240/50 amp female, and two 120/20 amp female sockets. Braking the 240v down to 120v at the end of the line really helps some of my 120 electrical tools run better than they would from a regular 50 foot extension cord.

That's not a bad price for that extension. 8/3 wire would be fine but it's more than you need for a 175 class welder. You could save yourself $10-15 dollars by making your own extension. Supplies are available at your local Home Depot, Lowes or electrical supply store.

10/3 SO wire is going to run around $1.60 per foot. Recepticals are going to be $12-15 dollars each. Then add your sales tax. Might be able to save a few more dollars if you shop around for the best prices.

Thanks guys, I pussed out and just ordered the one off of ebay. It will be overkill for now, but when I get a bigger machine in the future I should be able to use it.

Thanks for all of the help.

Another thing to consider is the weight of the cable. If you're going to be lugging this extension around you may want to consider a welding cart if you don't already have one.

Got this thing yesterday...it is a nice piece. It comes in at right around 23lbs. for the 50' extension cord.
