Default Question About Helicoil

Would you guys recommend helicoil for a stripped thread for a m6 transmission crossmember? I was torquing the bolts that hold the transmission crossmember to the floorboard and I stripped the thread.

If you can snip the tab off of the helicoil, it'd probably work fine.

Me, I'd probably just tap it bigger and use a slightly bigger bolt.

Helicoils only work if the bolt is fully threaded with the helicoil. I would consider a slimsert or a keensert. They are both much stronger and more durable.

What setting did you have on the torque wrench? The factory manual states 66 lb ft, and I was able to torque 3 bolts but the 4th just didn't feel right so I just let off vs. stripping it. Also, since the metal the bolt is threading into is not too deep, how did you know what length of helicoil to use? Thx!!!

Default helicoil

Timeserts are much stronger than helicoil. they are solid instead of wire

I may be dropping my tranny in the near future and was wondering what torque setting snapped your trans support bolts (4 cross member bolts)? I torqued mine to 66 ft lbs (at least three of them). I used the factory manual and confirmed via this torque setting sheet - http://www.texasfbody.org/TorqueSpecs/ However, I think installuniversity states 43 ft lbs for the bolts - I just don't want to strip nor have them undertorqued. Thanks!

Is your helicoil still holding up? Did you install a short helicoil since there's not much female thread? I'm just getting a plan in case of bolt failure - Thx!

you should have no problems with helicoil. im an engineer at an aerospace manufacturer and every tapped hole besides pipe or port uses helicoils. we go through hundreds a day

I agree Timeserts are the best way to go for that type of problem.

I have used them many times with great luck.
