Default Speaking of Extension Cords.... 230v??

A buddy of mine took an old dryer extension and changed the ends on it. It's run beautifully for him for years. I don't feel like dishing out over $100 for a 220/30/40 extension. Where do you guys buy yours. How have you come about them... etc.

Pro-Mod team gave me one, they were too lazy or rich to replace the smashed plug.

Like you said, make your own, I made an extension for my welder with left over 6 gauge from work & just bought ends. Looks kind of weird, but it worked.

Yeah, the thing of it was taht I didn't even want it, but at the price of copper - and for the cost of the connectors, it was too good to pass up. And after this last ice storm over in SE Michigan, I am damn glad that I didn't.

I have made them in the past and need to make two more for the new shop. One for the big tig welder and one for a HEAVY crane hoist. Both are 3 phase and its not that big of a deal, but kinda expensive for the material I need to do it right.

Just make your own. Go to a hardware store and buy the bulk wire off a roll, however long you need it and the ends. my 50 footer was like $55.

I used the bulk 3 wire cord for a three prong plug. I think the wires are like 10 gauge inside, not for sure. Its rated for like 300V. I use it all the time to run my welder in the shop.

ebay has good prices on generator cords,

Copper is so expensive right now, that making your own with the roll of wire at home depot/lowes is a lot more expensive than the ones online.

just make sure the connector is what you need.

It makes me wish I kept the 250' of 12 gauge SO cord I used to have laying around.

I wonder if a big heavy roll of cable would be cheaper in the end to buy in town rather then have shipped? I used to buy all my 0 gauge speaker cable on ebay when I was into audio systems.

Well.... I have seen my redneck buddies buy or "procure" some 8 gauge thhn or whatever stranded wire type and run it thru old garden hose; it gives you something to clamp the plug/recept. shells to, other than having to clamp to the wire, or run the risk of scraping the insulation off the wires while dragging the cable bundle around.
You can run 40 amps at 50' or better, no problem. We made one up before to run between an electric clothes dryer outlet, and an anchent union carbine 230amp arc welder. Welder bungee-corded to a cheap handtruck for mobility.

...Having said that, the "kosher" way is to go to the industrial electrical suppy house, buy a roll of SJO 8 gauge 2 wire with ground, and your preferred 40 amp plug/receptible. Then make up your extension. Try to find a buddy or electrician who has access to a PO account at the supply house, go in with him and pay cash. you can get around a 30% discount that way.

I just made a 30 ft. extension for the new mig welder. Went to the the industrial supply and bout 50 ft. of 8-3 extension cord and put a 50 amp plug and receptical on it. No big deal.

That is a bit on the high side or for a short run. Like less than 20 ft. The larger tig and arc welder I have are run with 6-3 and only about 25 ft from the main.

You can buy SO cord up to 6 gauge at lowes. That's how I make all of mine.
