Default Initial compressor startup / impact gun questions

On the first startup of my compressor, should I run it with the hose on it or without? It says to just crank up the regulator all the way and let it run for half an hour, but it doesn't specify whether the hose should be on there or not.

As for tools, I need to pick up a nice impact gun and some sockets, however I'm unsure on what size I should get. Should I go with the 3/8 or 1/2" for the impact gun? Which would be most useful for wheel lugs and big bolts in general. This won't be used for anything crazy, just don't want to buy one size and realize later on that I should have gone with a different one.

Jon, get the 1/2" for big bolts and lug nuts. Ingersol is a good brand to buy. Dont worry about the hose being hooked up or not, the volume isnt enough to worry about.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info. I've had my eye on an ingersoll rand. I was questioning about the hose because if the hose is on, wouldn't the engine stop running after it reached pressure? Whereas if the hose was not on, it would just run the whole time?

If you had the valve wide open, then it would run the whole time and never build pressure, but bleed off. I havent heard of doing that though. Hose on or having a valve on is the same thing.

My initial start up was without the hose. I just left the regulator as it was (preset at the factory) opened the drain plug and let it run 15 minutes per the instructions.

After 15 minutes, closed the valve and let if fill until it cut off....so far so good.

And for the impact, I'd opt for the 1/2" drive.

Craftsman had a good deal going on a kit a while back. 1/2" drive impact, 3/8" wratchet and some other assorted accessories...

I'm not sure about going with craftsman tools. I know they aren't crap, but at the same time they're not exactly the greatest either. I'm liking the ingersoll rand products and hear a lot of good things about them.

Eh, I've heard the rumors...but so far I've had pretty good luck and I've used quite a few of them over the years.

I know they're not top of the line, but they fit my budget!!

Did the same thing. Open the drain plug and that bad boy will run until you stop it.

I think that's what I'll do for 15 minutes. Then just let it run with the hose on till it stops. Then get to taking things apart, all speedy-like.
