another welder question
another welder question most of my diy welding experience is using an old stick/arc welder. i have used a small mig w/ gas at work. i want to weld my sub frames on (as well as other small projects). will a mig be enough? if so what size is needed to do the job right?
To do subframes, I'd recommend a 220V mig. You "can" do them with a 110V, but you'll be fighting to get enough penetration. A 220V unit will have plenty of nuts to handle it.
Brains is right. .023" or .030" wire will work best, overhead welding with heavier wire could become difficult for the inexperienced. Stargon gas(75% Argon 25% Co2) would be the best choice for gas. Last but not least (the most important) make sure to remove all foreign material at least one 1" from the weld area. Cleanliness is next to Godliness when it comes to welding!
Look guys being I worked as auto body tech and for years I'm with ya on the 220v, BUT...BUT my buddy bought a HOBART 120 volt 135amp welder from harbor freight ($450) and I will tell you I was most impressed!!! This thing welded like a champ! 3/16" steel with one pass no problem. Tons of power and most of all Hobart welders made by Miller. So either go with a 110volt Hobart 135 amp or a Lincoln and u will have just enough to be dangerous.
