Default Questions about how to modify headers.

Whats up ya'll? I recently finished my 6.0 swap into my 1982 Silverado, but the headers are making it hard to get the exhaust done. I used Pacesetter 2002 F-body headers(since the new swap headers are not on the market yet). You know how they have that angle on the driver side and turn out, well that's my problem. The collector turns right into the frame and leaves very little clearance(even after grinding the frame a bit). I tried flex-pipe, but there's just not enough clearance. A friend of mine offered to heat up the collector(near the bend) and bend/turn it straight. Will that work? If not, what other way is there to angle the collector straight back? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What if you cut a couple inches off the header collector?

or, you could cut it at an angle, turn the piece and weld it back to itself.

That's a good idea. I think I'll try something like that before I try bending the collector. Thanks.

sup sup, i gotmy buddys victor (edlebrock) ls1 headers for free and would have used them on my swap, but the drivers side collector was smashed the f up. after i re routed #4 tube, the one that goes really curvery and hits the control arm.. i was just going to cut the 4 tubes off at an angle, then cut the collector in shuch a manner where its open. no tubes in the collector, and weld the 4 tubes in the middle and weld the collector back on there, kinda like factory afftermarket.
i myself used pacesetters kinda worked better in the sence that the driverside points downwards. that helped the linkage work. if i had used the f-body the header would be right in the way. something else to look at.

So you're saying the truck Pacesetters worked for you? I was gonna use them, but when I mocked them up, the EGR tube was in the way on the passenger side. They were ceramic coated, so I didn't want to butcher them. So I sold them for just enough to buy the F-body headers that several people said were the best fit. Do you have any pictures of your exhaust from the bottom or top? Thanks.

Well, I took it to a local mechanic. He didn't speak english, so I had a hard time trying to explain it to him. I had taken a slip on collector that would have allowed him to just cut it at an angle that would lead straight back. But when I showed up to see the progress, he had just welded a pipe to the actual header collector and welded up the gap(it looks like crap). He told me that he wouldn't be able to weld on the top of the collector because his welder wouldn't reach(which is why I told him to tack weld it in place then take the header off and finish it). But at this point, it's better than nothing and I didn't have a lot of options as far as who to take it to. It's crazy how people around here fully weld their exhaust up as in they can never take it off without cutting it. Headers/manifolds get welded to y-pipes, Y is then welded to cat/cats, then welded to catback. I've even heard a few people around town talk about welding their headers to the heads to eliminate exhaust leaks.

Hate to be an a** but it sounds like you need to move a few hundred miles north.... Is that the only mechanic/muffler shop in town?

He wasn't the only shop in town, but he was the only one who would help me. I'd been asking around for help installing my exhaust for about 2months, finally my wife got this guy to agree to install it for me. I agree, I need to move up north where english isn't a foreign language.
The finished product looked like a**. And just like he told me, he left a spot where he couldn't reach his welder, so now I have to go find someone to fill in the hole he left. This guy even butchered the H-pipe. He took the v(160* angle) pipe and twisted and bent it semi straight as the crossover. But I just paid the guy what I owed him, $48 bucks, since it was my fault for not making my directions perfectly clear(I drew a picture with measurements and descriptions in english). Well, thanks anyway guys for the help and advice.

You any good with Oxy/Fuel welding? That's probably the only way you'll be able to get to that spot his mig gun wouldn't reach. Either that or a TIG torch, but even then they can be cumbersome.

is with tube # 4 cut off. re routing that one tube was super easy. i didnt use the f-body headers becuase they were used by my buddies low assp car and it was so dented i couldnt get it right, so i went with pace setters.

shows the header installed with #4 cut and the collector cut and rotated. it also shows that the collectors are perfectly strait (or there about which posed a problem with the shifter linkage. with pacesetter the factory bend downwards helped with that and i only had to trim abot an inch from the bottom of the rod not affecting anything)

shows that i dented the header a bit, and trimmed about 1/8 where the header was hitting the frame. the pace setters required more trimming of the frame, more denting of a couple of tubes, and the removal of the EGR tube. i wasnt going to run it anyway so.. plus it looks cleaner. if anyone asks, its a tahoe motor that doesnt come with egr.
in the end pace setter worked out ok.. i eneded up makeing a ORY thats pretty cool looking and functions like it should.
