Making power & Making headers, how?

Making power & Making headers, how? I've made a set of headers for my racecar, and I've been thinking about it a lot and I am wondering about if/how much power I'm LOSING at the flanges.
I'm using the GM Flanges with are larger than the ports on the head. I'm then using 1 7/8 J Bends welded inside there. I did smooth it out with a cheap rotary tool, but the ports on the headers I made are still way larger than the ports on the head.
Does this hurt power?
How can I solve this without cutting up my heads?
How much power?
How do you guys that make headers go about doing this, what flanges do you reccomend?
